Emperor was never sold.. There were however quite a few people who paid to be carried with a solid group who would go to a dead-ish campaign and flip the map.
Even with very little PvP skill, all your friend has to do is go to one of the dead campaigns on reset day, make sure he/she has all of the quests ready to turn in (having completed them on an active campaign), bring 2-3 friends along, and start taking resources. Your friend will quickly get a few tens of thousands of AP. Get the AP buff from killing a delve boss about 5 minutes before you start on the campaign too. Suicide to mobs after you kill the boss, and rez at the wayshrine for a quick way out.
I wrote this about making AP a while back. Take a read through as well.
Once your friend is 20k or more ahead of the next person on the leader board, start flipping keeps. Bring a LOT of siege. You can flip a keep with only a few people, though having 6 makes it a lot quicker. Don't bother with a ram as that takes time to kill the guards on the doors. If each person drops 3 stone trebs, you can take down a wall very quickly.
If there's really no opposition, you can take the ring in about an hour (with six people). Don't bother with your tri-keeps, outposts or resources, just take the six middle ring keeps.
If you plan for it well, and there's nobody competing with your friend, it should be a nice easy hour or two.

I haven’t seen someone absorb so much AP, so fast, and have such an army at his beck and call since Crown led the elves against the COVENANT at Alma Ruma Gate.
Edit: This also reminds me of when Sypher decided to play ESO for 24 hours straight to get emp solo. Politics and dissident elves saw to it that Sypher failed in his quest to sit on the ruby throne.
ah i understand @NightbladeMechanics
yeah i agree with that sentiment as well. i say that with sadness.
I dont wear the title but i sure do use the dye and home furnishing thrones!!I was on one of the 7 day campaigns yesterday. Within a minute of someone being crowned, there was a message saying he gave up the crown. So yes, people still sell emp crowns.
This doesnt necessarily mean they are selling emp. Something thats very popular is that people will make a deal with their own faction to not "surpass" someone on the leaderboard if they agree to drop campaign and give the next guy a chance. I dont know how I personally feel about that though. I think ultimately, its better to make deals with your own faction than with the opposite?
Make a deal. As in pay them gold or something? That's called selling emp.
no. I said: "to not "surpass" someone on the leaderboard if they agree to drop campaign and give the next guy a chance."
meaning they promise not to compete with each other and work together. Again, seeing as how that is arranged within the same faction, i feel like its a gray area.

Sypher couldn't out-gain @crown 's wife iirc, that not politics, that's just called not being good enough

I remember that event, and a few people in my guild (EP) kept trying to hunt her to help Sypher get ahead. When we saw her she'd be stealthing and using inevitable detonations and meteors near bleakers. The strategy she used and that Sypher later explained helped a lot of people from pve who didn't want to pvp quickly farm AP to get alliance skill line skills. It was something like: Throw out a lot of aoe damage when your two enemy groups fight, so when they kill each other you share the AP.
To us, it sounds more like someone is salty that they couldn't keep up with a good AP strategy. Don't get me wrong, I think Sypher is an amazing player in what he does, which is fight alone versus multiple players who are not great, and he sensationalises it very well for his audience! He is an entertainer, not an AP farmer. At that time he just didn't use an AP strategy and his killing and ganking wasn't able to keep up.
Regarding Crown, I've listened to him before, and while he can be condescending towards people who think too highly of themselves, and a pretty big d--k at times regardless, he is justifiably recognised one of the best strategists and smartest people in the game, and takes the time to teach people how to play. Regardless of his attitude or how big his ego was, there are very few people in the game who put the effort in that he has, and that is very respectable.
Regarding Sypher getting emp at other times, he's a solo player and did not ask for help from any groups or even in zone from what we were told! When you're top of the leader boards, if you expect that other people are going to stop having fun fighting wherever and push emp for you because you believe that you deserve it, then you're deluding yourself. I remember a conversation on the forums while this was happening where someone told Sypher to ask for help from the AD leaders in their discord server, and they would probably come help IF HE ASKED. He did not ask, and continued on acting as if he was entitled to having everyone drop what they were doing and push for him.
His tyrade of "f--k AD, f--k AD, f--k AD, you all suck!" (if I recalled that correctly) was when most of the big AD groups decided to take a break for a few days after reset since the last few days of the campaign were gruelling with a lot of time and stress while trying for the win. Seeing Sypher's rage and entitled attitude made a lot of people lose respect for him.
TLDR: If you're an entitled whiner who expects people to push for your emp without being asked to help, especially when they're not intending to pvp, then you're going to have a bad time. Also, Crown is a d--k.
Edited to fix the *stars* on bad words.

What I find interesting is your tactic of calling out anyone or anything you don't like as "interesting" or "questionable". The last time we saw that happen in ESO was when a young kid was making more AP than you, a witch hunt was started, and many of your twitch fans started whispering extremely abusive things to him. Last we heard (per discussion on TS a few minutes ago) was the kid's parents forbade him from ever playing ESO again after seeing some of the crap that you had your viewers send him.
TLDR: Sypher shows up in a thread that mentions some of the things he's done in the past, and he doesn't explain - hoping to distract everyone by calling a new account "interesting". Interesting.
P.S. - Hey babes @AFisher ! You should move down a channel so we can flex our muscles at you!
