Adds extra frames so that animation is smoother (no tearing etc). But it also adds lag (since it has to render an extra frame each time).
2) "Particles systems"
Extra detail on animations such as fire, smoke, flowing water, ... (this is primarily a CPU load not a GPU load).
3) Distortion
I guess this is the distortion you get above fires etc.
