Prices in this game...

Sorry about yet another noob question, but I'm really wondering about prices in this game. It seems that you can get the vast majority of things for a few thousand gold pieces. Armor, weapons alln the way up to purple are cheap. Some people try to sell marginally better yellow stuff for hundreds of thousands, but I don't see how they are worth it. Anyway, my point is, if you don't really need the money for anything and you can't really make a lot of money because everything is cheap, how is it possible that some people manage to make millions a week and why are they doing it?

I'm trying to figure out the big picture here. Should I worry about money? Should I grind it? What do I need it for?

You typically sell a gold piece for the price of the purple piece + the cost of the upgrade mats.

I don't recommend ever selling gold pieces though as people prefer to buy purple and upgrade it themselves.

If you're at end game, golding out all your gear helps and isn't really expensive (you'll have tons of gold by then).

Don't worry about gear until you hit CP 160, all gear before then is useless (just wear any junk you get from quests, but always make sure to wear at least one light, heavy, and medium piece so you level up all of them).

Deconstruct all gear you don't use. You'll want to max out all your crafting lines, so you can upgrade your gear later when you need to.

Making gold is also very quick and easy, so don't worry too much about it until you hit CP 160. Don't throw money away either though. You don't really need to buy anything until max level (unless you're buying housing furniture or something non-gameplay related). I suggest collecting ALL harvest nodes you come by as you level up. You'll have thousands of them when you reach max level, and they'll be worth a fortune.

a decent bind on equip set you'll find at guild stores can run you anywhere from 40k to 120k...

if you don't have the mats - upgrading blue to purple on your gear can run around 3 to 4k a piece...

if you only run one character, no problem...if you run multiple characters - getting good gear and re-speccing can get expensive...

Edit: just spent close to 100k buying the horses I didn't already have...if i was in to housing I'd probably be completely broke...

some things are cheap. other things are... not cheap. gold mats can add up if you are trying to upgrade your own gear. collecting gear styles can add up. if you are not farming for your own crafting mats, they may not cost as much at a glance , but at highest level you need almost a full stack.. and that adds up. herbs to make potions can go as high as 400 per single herb. so 4 potions could cost you close to 1k gold. oftentimes players go through dozens of potions in just a few hours. housing is a HUGE gold sink. some individual prices for not as in demand items ARE low. which is normal. the costs go up when you start min maxing, heading into luxuries etc... and that is how people both spend AND make gold. I mean, i sold half a million worth of furnishing patterns/new motif chapters this week alone... and promptly spent all of it just as quickly :P
    dirty worthless casual.

Other than factoring the cost of upgrade mats, the price has much less to do with the gold quality level and a lot more to do with the specific set item, and how much people are willing to pay to stop grinding for sharpened necro staff (last patch), or whatever will be the most popular weapons this patch. Whatever these are, they will sell at very high price, whether green quality or gold, because a lot of people would prefer to buy from another player instead of spending weeks or months trying to farm it.

You can't upgrade jewelry though, so gold quality makes a larger difference there.

If you are just leveling up and doing quests, etc, your build doesn't matter too much yet, so you can get by with whatever random armor and weapons you find.

However, once you get to the point where you want to start doing PVP or endgame dungeons, trials, etc, then you really need to figure out a specific build. At that time, gold will be very useful for you to buy gear or to buy materials for crafting and upgrading the gear.

Also if you want to buy a house and start collecting all the attunable set crafting stations, that costs quite a lot (around 35 million or so to collect them all). And if you want to earn millions of gold per week, it requires either a lot of gold to buy things to resell, or a lot of time to spend farming stuff.

In the meantime, if you want to level up / earn champion points faster, I'd suggest paying somebody to make blue quality gear for you with training trait, that will give you about 70% XP bonus.

Golding weapons is most important and don't do it until 160 and you know you use an set you will use for some time.
Most experienced player who level low level characters uses crafted sets.
if you say you are new and ask about armor sets to use in an nice guild you get it for free :)

At 160 things change, gear will not upgrade anymore so you can start investing in it,
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Thanks, guys. I guess I got my answer. I did notice that when I wanted to upgrade my belt to yellow I needed 7 yellow upgrade items and that they go for 4-10k each. That's when I gave up and thought purple would be good enough for me. :D

I'm guessing it's fun to upgrade, though, so I might do it over time just for fun.

In response to the original question, this game gives people are large number of activities they can focus on and some people really enjoy trading and making gold - even if they have no plans to spend it. Nobody is told they must do this or that, which to me is the largest part of the games appeal.

Everything that is sold in the game can be obtained without buying it but the game is full of people who have other things they would rather be doing. While this situation exists, there will always be a market for people to sell goods and make gold.

Some do nothing but PVP, others want to min/max characters and spend ages chasing the best gear, some people enjoy trials and/or vMA and spend ages getting high scores, no death runs, etc. These people all use food, potions and poisons, they all want to improve the new armour they get while doing what they enjoy but cannot do 2 things at once. They can think of nothing worse then stopping what they enjoy to go and farm for materials, so they buy it.

I've never set foot in vMA, never been in a vet trial, never ever been close to becoming Emperor in PVP, never had a dual and never been in battlegrounds. Still I play every day and never run out of things to do. I enjoy selling stuff that I collect along the way and while people out there want to buy their items instead of find, make or earn them, I will always have an opportunity to make gold.

My gold making received a purpose when Homestead came out - to buy every house I can access with in game gold. I currently have about 33 homes, which I paid about 21 million for and have 3 more (non DLC) to buy. I have made about 500k in the last 3 days and need another 3 million to buy these last 3 houses.

I will still continue to make gold when I have all my houses - just because I can.
