I'm tryin to figure out how to make a lightning staff heavy attack build work. So fAR I'm wearing elegance. But can decide between, necro, julianos, twice born or nightmothers sorrow.

I need help. I'm I high Elf sorc. With pets up. A buddy of mine and I are trying to see if a pure heavy attack build is viable for farming works bosses. I need help deciding which sets to use so vote!

Im currently using 5xNetch, 2xIlambris, 3 Moondancer and lightning vMA/Master staves (Masters front bar, just because I dont have anything better, since my main is a healer and I normally give away good dropped weapons like Infa, MD etc. I supose a simple crafted staff would also work, maybe even better with spell damage glyph).
I'm using a regular trial setup with one pet, and I have sorc shield on mainbar and refresh it in every rotation. Some bosses require some kiting, but overall its pretty easy. The hardest one Ive encountered was a nereid in Craglorn delve (well shes a joke but her adds can be brutal) and hunger boss in Morrowind (the one that drains your hp). The guar in Deshaan was quite annoying, too, with all the adds and stuns.
But I dont think that soloing bosses is an efficient way to farm. Its easier to farm public dungeon or start a group for bosses, just to save the time.

I don't think Elegance is a good set tbh. I ran 5 necro/5 elegance/1 kena with vMA lightning back bar for my first vMA complete with my mag sorc and it was very slow. Granted I would have been better off with a max mag monster set but that wouldn't have changed my mind about the set up.

You probably don't care much since you main a healer but I've actually had better luck on a dual lightning staff set up with a flame enchant so you can proc more Ilambris flame damage. Otherwise you're relying on just Force Pulse and Shooting Star (which you're probably mostly using destro ult).

I think we have strayed from a straight up heavy attack build. Maybe I didn't explain well enough. Which sets would allow for the hardest hitting heavy attack with a lightning staff with ZERO buffs. Just a straight up heavy attack? Elegance and what else?

    Probably Infallible Aether.

vMA staff would help a lot too if you have one.

Thats probably right.. but a ltitle out of reach for us atm. So it's either crafted or dropped sets we can buy.

Don't know the exact numbers, but I believe heavy attack damage will increase a lot more with high spell damage than high max magicka, so maybe julianos or even clever alchemist with 3 potion cooldown enchants.

Also, keep in mind heavy attack damage was significantly nerfed last patch. Before I was able to do as high as 30k on players / 60k on mobs. Now it is much lower.

None of the above. Off balance is the strongest buff you can have for heavy attacks. Check out the builds in my signature if you want to know more.

The highest Heavy Attack damage I could get was using this build:
    • x5 Alchemist (back bar)
    • x5 Elegeance
    • x2 Molag Kena
    • x1 vMA Staff

Fully buffed this is can give you a theoretical 33k HA. I haven't tested combinations since MW so there may be a better setup. Some candidates include:
    • Sergeant's Mail may be good for Lightning HA builds depending on if the damage is applied every tick (I think this has been nerfed recently).
    • Julianos for more steady HA damage.
    • DK is the best class due to their +40% HA buff. Sorcs have a +11% buff as well.
    • Sets like Infallible Mage don't do near as well as Elegance for HA damage.
    • You want as much Spell Damage as possible to maximize HA damage.

Note that all of this is only relevant for getting the maximum possible HA damage. A more balanced build may be more useful and better in the end.

I agree with everything @Reorx_Holybeard said, except that sergeants set definitely only applies on the last tick of a heavy atrack, it is still a really good set though. As mentioned, Heavy attack damage is only slightly affected by your max resources, so build for high spell damage, crit and penetration. I really recommend looking at Masel92's off-balance build - it will make your heavy attacks hit harder along with everything else.

I know you don't want to do dungeons for gear, but the netches touch set (+400 shock damage does apply to heavy attacks) is really easy to farm for (there are named charged lighting staves in the easy dungeon). If not then I'd suggest julianos if you are just doing overland farming, or spinners if you are farming dungeons and have more spell resistance to deal with.

Now here is my wildcard idea.. what about tourugs pact on infused staves? I haven't really thought this through but I assume it would be a guaranteed enchant proc every channeled heavy attack? Just a thought.
