Need help with character build

Hello fellow ESO players,

My name is Volsera and I've played ESO for almost 2 years now, I say almost because I have been gone for more than a year and have now start playing again because it is a really cool game with awesome lore. But when I started playing again I saw that a lot has changed and tbh, my character has never been well built because it was my first character and I just picked whatever race I liked with whatever class sounded cool.

I know it's easier to just start with a new character and play all over again but I'm really attached to this one and I also did like 2/3rd of all the alliance quests so it's a shame to give him up.
I'm looking for someone that can turn my Argonian Dragonknight with wasted skillpoints on everything into a good PvE build and since I am not really good at builds I hope some expert guru can help me out.

Thanks in advance!
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Pick some weapons you like to use and tell us a little bit about the kind of style you prefer to play. And when you say PVE are you talking about questing by yourself, or playing with others (content like dungeons)?

I love dual wielding and just getting in there and do as much damage as possible. Also I like to play by myself, questing and discovering places and also thieving has brought me a lot of fun so I hope that maybe a combination of those 2 is possible.

Do you have any interest in Tanking? I would venture to say that Argonian DKs make the best Tanks in the game. If you are looking to maximize what you currently have for group content, Argonian DK screams Tank, and Tanks are the most sought after role in tamriel.

If you are looking to do damage, then you generally need to pick either magic (destro staffs) or stam (DW/2H and Bow). I would generally suggest going the magic route with staffs until you are comfortable in a DPS role. It's a little easier to play, and your racial passives favor magic. If you are just looking for an open world build to run through PVE content, we can do that as well. I think we need a little more info on what it is you are trying to accomplish. No reason you cant have a few different builds on the same toon.

Not sure how I missed that one. If you are set on DW, then you really want to go stamina. Your race is definitely not Ideal for that, but its not a deal breaker. Stamina DK is arguably the best DPS in the game, but its not terribly easy to play in group content. For solo stuff, your big issue is going to be getting heals. The easiest way will be with Green Dragon Blood, the better way is to go into PVP to get vigor. I would recomend bow and DW. Bloodthirst and Blood craze (DW skills) can also give you some nice healing. Other useful weapon skills include Steel Tornado (AOE damage) and Blade Cloak (Defensive). On your bow, you will likely want Endless Hail and Poison Injection. Your big damage class damage skills will be venemous claw and noxious breath. An alternative would be to go with 2H over DW mostly because Rally is a great heal and Damage buff. I personally think the 2H is better suited to PVP.

If you want to give magic a try, this is frankly going to be easier to play, and you will likely feel a lot more powerful out of the gate. I would suggest a fire staff front bar and a lighting staff back bar. If you like mixing it up in melee range, this can be super fun.

Front Bar: Flame Lash, Burning Embers, Engulfing Flame, Inner Light, Annulment (light armor shield), Meteor
Back Bar: Elemental Blockade, Molten Armaments, Eruption, Deep breath, Coagulating Dragon Blood, Standard (or Destro Ult).

These arent min/max DPS bars, but they will give you a ton of healing and DPS. Keep up molten armaments at all times. Put Eruption and Elemental blockade and engulfing flames on the target. If its an AOE fight, do heavy attacks with your lighting staff and cast Deep breath between them. On single target bosses, put down the same DOTS, apply buring embers, and then go nuts with flame lash.

Your shield is your first line of defense. Burning embers, Flame lash, Deep Breath, and CBD all give crazy heals. You could look to drop the last two for more damage as you get more comfortable. What makes this build really cool is that if you put lighting blockade on a target from your back bar, it will proc your flame lash on your front bar. Its free, gives you heals, and looks awesome. Another magic DK trick is that if you are really in trouble, cast your shield then double cast burning embers. You will be full on health in an instant.

Best crafted set for magic is julianos, and for stam its either hundings or Night mothers. I would look for willpower (magic) or agility (stamina) jewelry. Monster sets make the best head and shoulders, but you can use crafted stuff as a substitute for the time being.

As to what I said about tanks earlier, it is true that Argonian DKs are tank powerhouses. That said, I would only build a tank for group play. If by yourself, you need to be able to kill stuff.

I think I'll reset all points and skills to focus on magicka since Argonians are arguably typical magic users and I can try to make a stam DK Argonian but it's just a lotttt harder to play. I'm gonna go with all those skills you just told me to go with and see how it works out, hopefully I can find someone that can craft me the armor I need.

If I have any more questions is it okay if I contact you?
    Thanks in advance!

EDIT: My Champion Points have all been refunded because I have been away for so long so do you have any tips on where to spend all my CP on?

Surely, if you are on PC/NA, I can craft you some gear. If starting from scratch, I would make your gear as follows.

Jewelry: Willpower, preferably arcane, but one healthy would not be a bad Idea. You want to get to at least 17-18k health. Spell damage enchants, but one Magic regen is certainly okay. Pretty cheap in guild stores these days. This will eventually become one of the trial sets like moondancer or infallible aether. If you already have those, then use them.

Lower Body (Chest, Pants, Belt, Boots, Gloves), Julianos in Divines with magic enchants. This will eventually become a set like Burning Spell Weave of the Sun, but Julianos is an excellent place to start.

Head/Shoulders: This will eventually want to be a monster set like grothdarr or skoria, but if you dont have these then I think Magnus is probably your best crafted substitute.

Weapons: I would make these magnus as well. Currently Sharp is the best trait for trials, and I prefer a combo of Fire front and lighting back. Traits could change next patch for sure. Eventually you will likely want a VMA staff and a trial staff, but it the meantime, crafted works. When solo with this build, a charged front bar staff is actually really nice because your flame lash will proc all the time.

I build that way so you can upgrade as you need without a bunch of recrafting. Generally you should go 5 light/1 medium/ 1 heavy. If you never plan to upgrade, you get the most resist with a heavy chest and medium pants. That said, I think it makes more sense to make your head and shoulders in heavy/Medium, because all the sets that you might replace Julianos with only come in light, meaning eventually your monster set will likely be heavy and medium.

As to CP, the green and red tree are really all about preference. In the green tree, you want a lot into magic recovery and magic return from heavies. In the read tree, I would prioritize, Elemental Defender, Hardy, Thick Skinned. Blue tree I run: 48 Elemental Expert, 75 Thaumaturge, 40 Elfborn, 34 Master at Arms. (courtesy of Nos and Asayre).

Well, if you want to craft yourself, you need to start researching. There is no real secret to it, just spend the skill points and try to always be researching 3 things at a time. In terms of just leveling the skill line, just decon everything you find. Julianos is 6 trait, so it will take a bit of time if you want to do it yourself. My advice is farm the mats you need, which can be done in an afternoon. Then offer a crafter 5-10k to make it for you. If you have the mats, it should be pretty easy to find someone. You want divines on all your gear at the moment, but that could theoretically change next patch.

If you focus only on the Armors that you will wear most of the time, you will get to 6 traits in a few weeks. So, for most casters, that is Heavy Chest and Legs, light everything else. You can run 7 Light if you want, but you will be squishy.

Good news is Seducer, Torugs and Magnus are excellent Magic sets and only require 3 to 4 traits known to make them. This you can learn in just a couple of weeks, faster if you wake up in the middle of the night to load up new research items for the first two to max out the clock efficiency. You can use these sets until you get to 6 traits. And, quite frankly, some of my Casters go with 5 Julianos, 2 Torugs and 3 Will Power.

And, you can always ask in zone chat for someone to make it.

Also, you mentioned rolling another character to play stamina with. Good idea, but do get your first character to CP160 first. Then all your Alts will be CP160 once they reach L50 and you can start getting your Forever Gear, well gear you will use for a long time anyway.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Thank you Oreyn! This is a really really helpful answer

Thanks for everything, sadly I play on PC/EU server so it looks like I got a lot of stuff to do after I reset all my attributes and skill points. The crafting will take the most time because I used to wear full heavy armor and have not been busy with the clothing skill line. Do you have any tips on how I should get started with leveling these things like clothing and staffs?

Well, if you want to craft yourself, you need to start researching. There is no real secret to it, just spend the skill points and try to always be researching 3 things at a time. In terms of just leveling the skill line, just decon everything you find. Julianos is 6 trait, so it will take a bit of time if you want to do it yourself. My advice is farm the mats you need, which can be done in an afternoon. Then offer a crafter 5-10k to make it for you. If you have the mats, it should be pretty easy to find someone. You want divines on all your gear at the moment, but that could theoretically change next patch.

I have my full Julianos gear and magnus weapons so I should be fine for now, I reached level CP 160 today and my gear is CP 120 so I should ask a crafter soon. The build is working out really well, keeping molten armaments up all the time and casting elemental blockade while spamming deep breath and just use the destruction staff really tears my enemies to pieces. :) I thank you a lot for the time you put in to come up with a nice cool build for me :D
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.
