comparison of ESO against next best mmoRPG

Hi, now I have an ulterior motive for this, I want to demonstrate to zenimax why ESO is so close to being the best mmorpg by a mile, but absolutely fails because of 1 thing - raid/pvp performance. To demonstrate this i have given my (opinionated) list of pros and cons against the next best mmorpg. I have 3 months of my sub to go, so I am an investor, been playing games since the 80s, dev for 20 years so i understand some things and I love most of what the game offers, but again the ruinous game performance means I have switched to others games again - just sick to death of it. Zenimax get your head out of your arse and think long term, invest in the game engine.

That said, what do you think, fair comment below?

(ESO score/next best game score)
Graphics 9/9
Music 9/9
Storytelling 10/9
World size 10/10
World ambiance 10/9
pve content 10/10
pvp content 8/10

and now the ugly.

pvp performance 2/10 < 100 ping is good performance and a decent benchpark, what we have is an utter mess, poor scalability, not robust, net code not fit for purpose, buggy.
raid performance 7/10 "" can live with lag, but compared to other games performance is *** poor.
skill and game play fluidity 6/10 - 5 seconds to switch weapon, skills not firing, animation cancelling, rubber banding, so on and so on.

this is when the game has the normal pvp player levels (reduced over time i suspect) at the moment the game is beyond even this, score 1/10, that's even taking into account the additional issue of the alleged DOS attacks.

Nobody can tell what the next best MMORPG will be though... But I agree with the score you gave to ESO.
    Fishoscandi - Orc NB
Cookie of Dough - Dunmer Templar
Smells Like Tree Spirit - Bosmer Sorc

to begin with, could you please make your marking scheme consistent?

i could not tell if something was supposed to be a score out of 8, 9, or 10 and whether or not you had given a mark higher than the max value allowed in your marking scheme

Yes ESO has the issues you've highlighted, we know this and making ratings or saying it can be the best if those are fixed won't really change much. For me ESO is the best MMO out there because I play no others actively any more, ratings mean nothing vs the fun and friendships I have here.

Honestly there is a far simpler rating system you can apply to every game regardless of its issues.

Is if fun for you Yes/No.
Depending on the answer you either play or don't play it.

This thread is really seeming just like a more disguised version of "fix your game" with some "you'll be the best if you do" thrown in.
Then again it's early Sunday afternoon and I've not had coffee yet so I could be taking it the wrong way.

If they fix performance i can live with procs, op stuff, exploits, bots, ce... But i highly doubt, its been like this even worse since 2014...

truth is=- they can't fix it.

it was poorly optimised client side from the beginning. they've taken the server side software as far as they can- unless they strip down everything, get everyone to uninstall the game and reinstall it- with a new client - they can't improve the game. but honestly this is what they need to do. every restaurant closes for renovations every now and then- and its time- 3 years- that they do it. i believe in this game and hope to play it 5 years from now- provided it comes with the times- WOW died with it -failed to stay fresh. ESO needs to learn and they can be the biggest game in the world mmo wise- easily.

There is no such thing as best MMORPG, because for the most part the things that make up what is good about an MMORPG for an individual are very subjective.

For example, take combat, I've heard many times in ESO people saying it has the "best" combat in any MMORPG, but then I've heard that exact same thing in GW2, they can't both have the "best" combat can they, hence it is highly subjective and what you might find great someone else will find terrible.

And if you want to be objective about it (at least in terms of numbers) then the 'best' MMORRG is apparently a 13 year old game that charges a sub, yet still has more players than newer MMORPGs including this one, which says something about the state of the MMORPG genre.

Go have your coffee, secure in the thought that you are right.

This is a thread about PVP lag and disconnects, with a side dish of general PVE lag. Not saying that these are not valid points, but the subject is well covered.

It is also a subject that is currently clouded by actions outside of the game that influence the perception of the game. It is pretty hard to tell from the outside what problems are due to DDoS, what problems are due to ZOS servers and software, and what problems are due to the Event happening. The DDoS was nicely timed with the patch and Event, probably deliberately.

That said, what do you think, fair comment below?

    (ESO score)
    Graphics 9
    Music 9
    Storytelling 10
    World size 10
    World ambiance 10
    pve content 10
    pvp content 8
    pvp performance 2
    raid performance 7

I'd probably break out PVP performance into the type of PVP, just to be more clear.
this is when the game has the normal pvp player levels (reduced over time i suspect) at the moment the game is beyond even this, score 1/10, that's even taking into account the additional issue of the alleged DOS attacks.

ZOS has no reason to lie about the DDoS. It is much easier for them to just not say anything at all. After all, this is what they normally do. ZOS has demonstrated over the years that they really have little interest in "damage control" related to forum hysteria. They make announcements when they are ready, if they are ever ready.

As for it being "alleged", that has long past. Anyone who is paying attention should now know that it is really happening.

The title implies eso is the best, this is not objective. It's subjective. Therefore, you can't have a second best.

I thought the same initially, then realised that he is giving ESO's score first (presumably out of 10) followed by the corresponding score for "the next best MMORPG".

Unfortunately, he doesn't specify what "the next best MMORPG" is so the comparison is utterly meaningless. The sole purpose of the post seems to be to let us know that he thinks it's a fantastic game other than for the performance which is terrible. I agree with him on the first part, but don't have any performance issues myself.

For the time being I find ESO to be the most fun MMO around. Although, Ashes of Creation is looking pretty good. Lets hope they can live up to their promises.

Ye i didn't mention other games because that turns very quickly into a 'my game is better than yours' forum combat nonsense and i'm actually saying ESO is top on nearly everything so the scale is not relevant. But your spot on, what im really saying is that the game is absolutely brilliant but for performance, which in any other game would be absolute top priority to be fixed because its really not acceptable. WOW had issues at the start as did GW2 as did Wildstar for example and the dev houses all invested to fix these to a good level.

Zenimax thinks' that it its ok to leave their (well document and discussed) server side engine/code issues unaddressed because their pve is bang on - that's a *** poor position to take in a mmorpg, PVP and raiding is a big draw for people and a huge part of end game.

Put it another way, you can summarize as this, ESO is a great PVE mmorpg with Server performance that would be unacceptable for any other AAA game out today or in the past.

Here is another thought, if they cant fix the engine (which is in all likelihood the issue - it was called out before release), spend the millions needed to replace what they need to replace and amortize the cost. That's the correct call for a serious professional code house that cares about their product.
