How effective are the different types of bait?

I understand that each water source needs a specific bait; crawlers for foul, insect parts for rivers, guts for lakes, and worms for oceans.

But what about the other baits for these sources; fish roe, shad, minnow, and chub?

Like, is using fish roe in foul water the same as using crawlers?

I believe the "other baits" are more apt to catch rare fish, but don't quote me on that.

I do not believe the "other baits" are more apt to catch rare fish. I have never seen that confirmed at least. I think the reason for the other baits is that while fishing you will occasionally catch one of them, which you can then use as bait at a different water type.

I believe it is just a way to sometimes give you additional bait for other water types.

Fishing with one or more other people does give you an increased chance at rare fish, but also depletes the fishing spot faster.

Yeah, you'd think if one was better than the other then it would be listed as such on some site. I just thought of it when I was at a guild trader. Now, I know when it comes to prices, some players are known to set ridiculously high prices that will never get them a sale - but I saw someone selling a single chub for 1,000 gold. I was like 'That's like selling a single worm for 1,000'

Regardless, it got me thinking whether a chub was better than a worm - but I don't think it is.

The best explaination as far as I'm concerned is a combination of:

1.) JasonSilverSpring: "... I think the reason for the other baits is that while fishing you will occasionally catch one of them, which you can then use as bait at a different water type. ..."

2.) The alternate baits are just to give variety.
The problem with society these days is that no one drinks from the skulls of their enemies anymore.

Best way to get the Achievement?

    1. Use one of the two preferred baits for the water you are at.
    2. Fish with at least 3 or 4 other players.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Nah, I'm just going to fish by myself.

I'm looking for more in the lines of what bait to use, what fish is where, etc that's up to date with current DLC.

I'm not sure there's every been any fully documented research to prove the extent of any benefit of fishing with others. Didn't the guy with a dozen master anglers say he didn't notice any real difference? Maybe I'm imagining all that!

The main benefit is in using the correct bait for the water type as that means you won't get used bait which is worthless. That said, I tend always to use insect parts as my "go to" bait as they're so easy to accumulate compared to the other baits.

This is a good guide to fishing: http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Fishing

There is a loading screen tool tip which states that fishing with others improves results, but not sure how accurate it is.

There are some good add-ons for PC that can help as well. There is also a drink that highlights fishing spots and identifies the water type.

According to a master fisher friend, the bonus baits are no better than the regular ones.

I've got Master Angler (takes months, by the way, so be prepared to fish a LOT), and I don't believe that the rare bait makes it more likely to catch rare fish. If anything, I think it was added to the game to give another option to the pool of possible catches.

You could catch a rare fish, a regular white fish, a housing fish, a wet gunny sack, or rare bait. With that additional option of rare bait thrown in there, you have five different types of catches. Of the rares, you usually have four (one blue and three green), of the whites you usually have three. So if there is someone good at statistics, and if all things are evenly weighted (they are NOT), you can determine your odds of catching a rare fish.

Now add to the equation the bonus when fishing with others. Though I don't know if it has been officially confirmed, there has been information going around for a long time that 2 people on a hole increases your odds of a rare by 10%, 3 people by 15%, and 4 people by 25% (not 20% supposedly). Any more people than four per hole that will just dry up the hole quicker.

As far as addons - must haves, in my opinion, are:
    * Voltan's Fisherman - For showing the what type of hole you're at once you've pulled your first fish. Pretty much makes the Fish-Eye Rye drink only good for making the holes "glow". Also has a sound and image indicator so you know when to reel in. I have mine set as bright pink with a "ding" noise so I can't miss it.
    * Voltan's Fish Fillet - Unless you like to wear the buttons out on your keyboard as you sit there and fillet fish after fish, you want this one. When you are done fishing for the day (or need to AFK for a few moments to make dinner), start filleting your fish. It still does them one by one, but you don't have to keep hitting the buttons yourself. It will go from one type to the next filleting each stack.
    * Rare Fish Tracker - You need this one to see what fish you need in each water type in each zone. Once you catch a certain rare fish, it will change color (I have mine set to turn darker/grey, but you can also set it to highlight caught fish) indicating that you no longer need that one.
    * (not necessary but fun) Fishing Emote - You can choose one emote to do instead of the fishing rod animation. Makes things more interesting.

If you do decide to fish with other people, there are some good fishing guilds out there. I was in one called Lucky Lure. It's nice to fish with others because it can get hella boring if you don't have people to make naughty jokes with... ;)
Another thing I like to do when fishing is look at videos or email or whatever on a separate screen while I fish. It requires so little attention that you can do other things. I knew someone who had a keyboard set up as a foot pedal and would run one account fishing and play ESO on the other account. Can you imagine splitting your attention that way?! He made a ton of money though!
