one or more files in use such as game?

I'm new to the computer but when I try to update for the patch today it stops and says one or more files is in use such as the game, and tells me to close it. but nothings open besides launcher.

it offers to repair so I do the repair and right before the repair finishes I get the same error.

any suggestions?

Sounds like you do not have Administrative rights to make the changes. Check to see if you are an Administrator and if not you should be to update files.

Open task manager and look for anything related to ESO. Close it down, open the browser and continue running a repair, updating or logging in, whichever you're trying to do.

well as for administrator I check but I just bought the computer and was the first and only person with an account on here but ill double check. and I did try the task manager and literally nothing is open. well now the internet is but I had it closed when doing this

Hey bud. I've got the same issue popping up. I've cleared off my task manager. I've repaired twice now. When I click "Play"- nothing happens. After repairing, I get the message about "permissions and one or more instances..."

If you get an error stating "Error 1032 - OSError_Locked", follow the process below:

Close the ESO Launcher.
Open task manager by pressing [Ctrl]+[Shift]+[Esc] together.
Go to Processes.
Right click on ZoCrashReport and end the process.
Restart the ESO Launcher.

The game should now update and patch.

If you are still having issues, you can also look for duplicates of any of the following files in your process tree: "eso.exe," "awesomeium.exe," and "bethesda_launcher.exe" and remove them as well.

Reading old posts about the problem you're having, some people said restarting their computer solved the issue.

@jaburns ok I figured it out. thanks everyone for the help.

but I didn't shut the game down properly so when I turned on computer I did have a crash report. and when I open task manager it shows nothing is open but if I hit details it shows everything in the background and eso was one of them. so I closed than and it updated. hope this helps jaburns.

and thanks again everyone I wouldn't have found it without you guys, it clicked when someone mentioned crash report and then checking processes in task manager

Yeah- I just figured mine out as well. I didn't see a crash report... but I figured something was "wonky" (that's the scientific term for it). Here's how I fixed mine:

1.) Get pissy and mumble to yourself that you're a subscriber and you just purchased Morrowind.
2.) Shut down your computer. Stew for a few seconds as it restarts. First world problems. Children are starving in Africa...
3.) Run the repair oooooooone more time. Think about all the megagigatronic bytes of data that are being used.
4.) Browse Reddit while waiting.
5.) "Oh! It worked!!!" Log in.
6.) Forget that this ever happened and continue to theorycraft the magnificence of a Dunmer DK tank.

TL;DR- Restart your computer and run a repair. Log on.

ARG!

I have tried all the above fixes. Nothing works. Still get Error 1005.
Nothing i can find with Task Manager.
Made certain that i am Administrator.
Any other suggestions?

Error 1005 is a Launcher Error. Make sure you have admin rights to the Launcher itself.

I made certain that Admin is checked for launcher.
System Mechanic did find a broken eso file but could not fix it and deleted it. Arg.

I don't use the launcher when I play the game because it sometimes causes problems for me. I just use the eso.exe to start the game. They say not to but it works for me as long as I open the launcher after each update and let those load.
