Photo bombing the loading screen...

Hi all, like me you all have probably seen THE ROCK that's been photo bombing the loading screen picture's. I would really like to know where this flying rock comes from.
In the picture with the volcano, its clear that the rock did not come from the volcano. In the other pictures it just hangs in the air.
Is there a story behind the rock or did developers think a flying/floating rock on loading screens will look cool. Maybe they want us to think about the rock and then we might miss the 5 hours it takes to load.
Anyway what is your thoughts on the rock...

You mean the rock that is held in place by Vivec, preventing it from destroying Vvardenfell?

That's Baar Dau! There are numerous theories in-universe about where it came from, but the gist of it is that it's a meteor or small moon that would have crashed into the city below, except Vivec is keeping it suspended there as a reminder to the Dunmer people both of his power and of their reliance on him.

Some time after ESO, the Dunmer build a prison inside the meteor. Pretty good place for a prison.

Many years later, after Vivec disappears, some Dunmer make a pact with Clavicus Vile, sacrificing numerous souls to him in order to keep Baar Dau from crashing into the city. Inevitably, this arrangement collapses, and the meteor crashes, which is a massive environmental disaster whose effects are felt all across Morrowind. This is the environmental disaster that creates the numerous Dunmer refugees you meet in the 4th Era in Skyrim.

So there is a story and its not just some random rock. Thanks for all the reply's. I've read the lore and now the rock makes sense.
Want one, much smaller for housing (must have slow rotation animation) otherwise I can put any rock in the air and it will stay there, that's why it must have a rotation animation (getting off own topic).
    Anyway thanks again for info.

Yes, because while it appears to be stationary, it is still screaming down on Vivec City, with all the force it would have had were it not held there by Vivec. Once released, it slams into Vivec City as if nothing had been holding it. That sets off Red Mountain, and perhaps even Ash Mountain and Tormented Spire, due to proximity. Between the impact, resulting tidal wave, volcanoes, and earthquakes, pretty much all of Morrowind is in a sorry state by the time of Skyrim. Probably destroyed or heavily damaged places like Devon's Watch, Bal Foyen, and who knows what else.

That's the theory outlined in one in-game book (namely, that Sheogorath tricked Baar Dau into hurling itself at the city. All accounts agree that Baar Dau is a sentient being, not just a rock). The thirty-third sermon of Vivec has a different version of the tale.

Basically, according to Vivec's account, Baar Dau thought he deserved to be a full-fledged member of the Serpent's group of constellations, but they wouldn't take him, so Baar Dau appealed to Lorkhan for help. (Whatever the hell appealing to Lorkhan amounts to, since Lorkhan isn't there anymore; that one's tough, but hey it's the Lessons of Vivec.) Lorkhan made a deal with Baar Dau to grant him even more power than that, but before Baar Dau could carry out the terms of the deal, Vivec and Nerevar interfered. (Vivec had something against Baar Dau, because Baar Dau was in some way involved in Vivec's mating ceremony with Molag Bal.) Nerevar made a deal with the Mage and the Warrior, who enabled him to find where Baar Dau was hiding. Before he could find Baar Dau, though, Nerevar ran into Lorkhan, and while they were talking Baar Dau siezed the moment of distraction and hurled himself at Vivec's city out of spite. But Vivec caught him in time.

The Lessons of Vivec are awesome.

It's also possible that Vivec... or, you know, Kirkbride, was seriously strung out on caffeine and nicotine while writing the Sermons.

Ok wait wait wait, so the rock called Baar Dau is actually a celestial being that possesses (way to many s's for a non native english person) the rock and is somehow involved with Molag Bal's mating ritual. These celestial's and dadric princes have just to weird lovers quarrels for us mortals to understand, I for one didn't know that they mated. ;)

Well it's already been answered but it's a good thing that it crashes and destroys Morrowind. As much as I hate Argonians, the Dunmer are a disgusting race who blindly followed the 3 fake gods, and look how that turned out. Argonians should be the slaves of a different race tbh, preferably Altmer seeing as they are the master race.
