I heard before prices will go up with morrowind, but morrowind made them go down why is that. Why do merchants undercut anyway its a terrible idea, why do they want less gold

They undercut to get more money faster, instead of a fair amount at a steady rate.

What you're experiencing is a soft market. There are more sellers than buyers. It's not as simple as supply and demand, but there is definitely more supply than demand. Materials will continue to go down in value until there is an excessive need for them or new materials are introduced.

Because i'd rather loose out on a few thousand gold but sell in bulk than earn more but at a tediously slow rate. Just like in real life if its not selling fast its sitting and wasting your time.... or something like that.

That's not what the OP is saying though. You're not suppose to be wasting time or selling at a slow rate. The new content was suppose to spark demand to help price inflation.

OP was asking why merchants undercut, how its a terrible idea and want less gold... i believe my post answers all three does it not?

In the past, a new DLC has typically increased prices on certain mats, especially high end tempers. That hasn't happened for about a year because, as some other posts have mentioned, there are now lots of players engaged in trade and therefore more supply than there is demand. So, while sales generally increased as Morrowind launched, and they will continue to be high for a while, the glut of supply soaked up the increased demand without the need for a price increase.

In fact, prices have not dropped either, they have remained remarkably steady. Some traders are selling mats in large bundles to move stock quickly and, as is often the case in any any market, bulk selling/buying tends to be concluded at a lower unit price. However, smaller bundles and single units have risen by a small percentage, keeping the overall averaged unit price of most mats at the same price as before Morrowind (or thereabouts).

Well, you're looking at the effect though, it's deeper than that.

Few new sets to craft or upgrade. Demand for tempers has really been high just after One Tamriel because people had many new sets available. By Homestead prices had fallen to where they were before and they are stable since. The only anomaly is Ancestor Silk which is 4-5x the price of other top tier materials. I suspect there isn't much of an incentive for people to farm it since the price of Dreugh Wax is low as a result of many people grinding and refining the resulting leather scraps; people chiefly farm raw mats in order to refine the gold tempers. I don't farm mats because I find it boring and time consuming but I do pick nodes as I go around, decon some of the trash gear and do crafting writs on 4 characters. In the end my supply doesn't run out and I end up with plenty of tempers. I sell the surplus, except the gold ones.

Morrowind added quite a few new players. New players dont have as much demand for high-end tempers because they arent cp160 yet. However, new players still supply high-end tempers, therefore increasing supply in relation to demand. This has been true of previous expansions as well, but Morrowind is unique in the sheer numbers of new players as a net supplier of mats vs older players and net users of mats. Then there is also the fact that for such a large zone, there arent that any new sets....the fewer the new sets, the less demand for mats. I mean, the gold coast and hews bane were small areas, and yet have as many sets as morrowind(aside from the battlegrounds PvP related sets)
