Should I not craft at all on my main character??

I was just reading in zone chat and people were talking about how it's not a good idea to craft with your main because you won't have enough skills or something for all of your class/weapon/guild/combat skills.

I'm already far enough into my character that I don't want to reroll. I just want to be self-sufficient with one single character and not have to worry about alts or anything at all. I enjoy crafting but I want to do everything on one character without having to switch to a character for PvP, PvE, crafting, etc.

I have 2 characters that craft: Main does Blacksmithing, Woodworking, and Clothing since motifs account for multiple items, it makes sense. I have another character that does all my consumables with Alchemy, Enchanting, and Cooking.

All my other characters have everything maxed out for Hireling mail, of course. Each character gets 5 mail every 12 hours with 10 total its a nice haul. For those you only need the max cap 10/10, 3/3 sight, and 3/3 hireling skip everything else. Enchanting needs the 10/10 Potency and 3/3 Hireling, cooking just needs the 3/3 Hireling.

I have crafting in all 6 areas on my main and it is still able to perform two different roles in serious trial raiding without issue.

However, it is easier to spread the crafting across two characters until getting 300+ SP. It is how I had it initially. Researched traits and had armor and weapon crafting on one and a second had all the consumable. I still have 4 characters with max crafting now. All have 300+ SP.

So, in the end, it is a choice how far you will push a character to get SPs and how you want to organize things. I will say it is nice to be able to craft pots, food or enchants on any character when needed. Those are the only ones that are done with regularity.

Those people who say that are simply people that do not enjoy everything the game has to offer. If you do all content, especially questing through all the zones, you should have enough skillpoints in the game to use on your fighting skills and trade skills. Don't neglect questingg if you want enough skillpoints in the game

Haven't done the math as not ingame at the moment, but you would need somewhere around 150-200 skillpoints to max out all the crafting on one character. Whilst you will acquire plenty of SP over time, certainly while you are still leveling you won't have the amount necessary to cover all your crafting and your abilities etc.

Back in the day it was usual to spread the crafting amongst various alts, leaving your main free to allocate SP for combat. Now the perceived wisdom is to have a Master Crafter who looks after all your crafting needs. This actually makes sense.

Recently I've dedicated one of my higher level alts to doing exactly this, and it is not taking long to get there. This alt used to be my main and had accrued enough SP to completely cover all crafting, once I had reset the SP. The thing that takes the most time is the research grind, which can't be speeded up that much, and therefore needs to be started immediately your toon begins crafting. Of the remaining 8 toons, one is my main adventurer and the others do daily writs and have hirelings to maximize the amount of resources, recipes and so on that I can get. My main adventurer doesn't craft at all.

It's a trade-off. Doing everything on one character is convenient but there aren't enough skill points to learn every possible skill so you have to give something else up. Maybe you can't make them a vampire or werewolf, or put points into the guild lines, or as many weapons. Plus it will take longer to complete your build.

On the other hand spreading it across alts means switching and keeping track of who has what, plus levelling them all up.

    I don't think there's a right answer, just what's best for you.

You will regret not having your main as your crafter. I have every single crafting passive used, I have every skill I could need, and not only do I have spare skill points, but also a ton of skyshards I haven't found and quests that reward skill points that I have not completed

My Main has nearly 300 skill points and I have more than enough to fully spec all my class abilities, my two weapon trees, all applicable Guild trees, Racial passives, and all of the crafting that applies, leaving me with some skills left over. Yeah my main can't do any Enchanting or Alchemy, but I don't really care about those two.

I'm very happy with mastering 3 durables on one main and 3 consumables on the other. I also have both take a point to find herbs and clothing plants easier and 3 points to make foods last longer. And points to deconstruct better. That all said, they both have about 40 extra skill points so there is plenty of skill points if you take reasonable care to gather them.

My only complaint is that some furniture crafting crosses skill lines in a way that my set up doesn't really support - but I don't care much about furniture crafting and have friends who can help any limited needs there.

My advice would be take all crafting skills to 50 with all characters (costs/loses nothing) then, at a minimum, put points into key areas that makes them better adventurers - making food last longer for sure, then consider points for deconstructing help and help finding resources.

    This.

I have all the crafting skills maxed on my main, all the racials, all the class skill lines, all destro, resto and s&b skills, heavy armor and light armor, mage's guild, some from fighter's guild, undaunted...

There are A LOT of skill points available. You can't get absolutely everything, but you can get everything you need.

You get skill points from leveling up, from skyshards, from gaining ranks in PvP, from the main storyline quests, DLC quests, dungeon quests, public dungeons events...

There are A LOT of skill points to be had.

Also, as soon as you finished researching traits from clothing, blacksmith and woodworking 12 skill points will be free to reassign.

Yea, I saw the skills that reduced research trait time and definitely had to have it. I guess I'll just focus on blacksmith/clothier/woodworker so I can make my own gear/weapons.

Then maybe make an alt for the secondary craft stuff...

Does the actual skill that I gained in those other skills matter? Like the experience I get in skills to actually level them up? (not talking about spending skill pts, just the regular skill level bar)

If your are one of those characters who likes to do everything on one character you should be fine. The only times I would see it being an issue is if you play a little bit on each character. Or you run a character you like to have enough options to tank/heal/dps then you might be stretching it thin. You will be stretched thin at the start no matter what.

My main has top tier crafting times six plus maxed out race/class/guilds/weapons/armour as I want. I'm not sure exactly how many skills he's got but he's less than twenty skyshards short of the lot and there are a few skill points left in things like the Vvardenfell public dungeon group events and even (God forbid) PvP. Of course it's hard to do everything when your main isn't that far developed but that's just life.

If you are researching, having crafting on your main can be tricky. It's up to 12 skillpoints devoted exclusively to it that you'll really want to put someplace else. However once you have full 9-trait research and can safely refund those points it's extremely gratifying.

Beyond that I have no Issues keeping all crafting skills max level and using some accessory points on things like Keen Eye and 3-point hirelings.

There are enough skill points in the game that you can have it all. If achievements are your thing you will want to craft on your main regardless of if you decide later to spec out of it. Without dlcs you can get something north of 250 skill points I think.
