Top 100 RPG's of all time

most recent game informer had a top 100 RPG's of all time. and while this is a divisive issue to be sure I figured I would list out the Bethesda games and rank.

warning ESO is Zenimax not Bethesda /warning


-TES IV Oblivion made it up to the 52nd place

-TES III Morrowind made it up to 21st place

-Fallout 3 made it up to 12th place

-and TES V Skyrim was king of the 100 at 1st place on the list


So grats to Bethesda for making some of the greatest RPG's of all time, and making GI's top RPG of all time Skyrim.

one of the reasons listed for winning was that at its heart RPG's are role playing game that let you play whatever character you want, however you want, wherever you want, and no game accomplished that quite like skyrim.

I have to agree with that and like that TES games have always referred to the title character as a title rather then name (dragonborn, hero of kvatch, vestige, etc, as we all choose are own) while most other games have a titled main character you play as (witcher and mass effect for example) fallout 4 was arguably as close as they got to having a more fleshed out main character (nate/nora) as well as a more personal story and was HEAVILY criticized for it (didn't even make the list)

side note fallout new vegas made it to 36 (obsidian not Bethesda), all mass effect games were on the list, 1 being the lowest, 3 being in the middle, and 2 being thie highest rated at 4th place. the witcher 3 was the only witcher game on the list and was ranked at 5th place. there were many showings of pokemon, and final fantasy (x, vii, and vi was ranked 2nd place, among others), blodborne and dark souls made it onto the list as well.

fallout 3 reinvented the series and layed the ground work that obsidian just improved on, fallout 3 was the more revolutionary game even if new vegas may be considered better.

however most reasons are just fan boy excuses, I LOVED new vegas and it had some of my favorite DLC and characters of all time, BUT it had some pretty glaring flaws as an rpg that it was clear obsidian was not used to making a Bethesda style open world game.

the biggest being the donut of a map and the railroad of "go this way around the map and visit these scenarios in this order. . .oh whats that, you want to go that way? oh well there are 50 super deathclaws that you just cannot beat or sneak around yet, so get going that other way!"

Really nice choices!
I like them all very much too!
But my favorite RPG I would have to say is wearing only my underwear, a cape and a mask (duh?!) while I chase down my roommate's cat pretending it's a tiger while imagining the whole neighborhood screaming at the top of their lungs in awe " TAKE OFF YOUR UNDERWEAR!, WE WANT TO REPAY YOU" for saving their lives . And if I get that tiger, oh boy, repaid I'll be!

I see that list as more a collection of the top 100. So the general rankings are more subjective.

I am also happy that I played most of those games.

witcher 3 is closer to a jrpg in that you play a specific character and their story. Bethesda RPG's are western RPG's in that you make your own character and play how you want, that's why it wins as a "RPG"

kina what I thought too, system shock and the original deus ex were there, and those are progenitors to a lot of games (all bioshock games owe there existence to system shock)

I spent weeks of my life on that game (most of it swapping floppy disks) ...

Witcher 3 is actually a really good game with some amazingly well done characters. The Baron in particular is both despicable and likable at the same time.

I prefer games where I can create my character but that doesn't make the games better in my opinion. Bethesda is the best at what they do and ESO is great but my favorite game is Mass Effect.

P.S I'm a straight female with no interest in boobs

Skyrim at 1? I mean, I like the game, but.... I really wonder how they built their list. Of course, the vast majority of these "top 100" lists that magazines/websites make are flawed in some way. /shrug


(haven't played any Witcher past the first one, 'cause I can't stand Geralt. )

I admit to not playing them just because I was not interested in them tbh, there was a time when I would get every new game but now I tend to relax with games for months on end XD

though as a cyberpunk/shadowrun fan I promise you I will be getting cyberpunk 2077 whenever that finally comes out.

also quit playing mass effect after the first one, I liked it but it just didn't grab me enough to invest in a trilogy, though once again anthem looks promising and I will be getting that as well.

I liked Witcher 3 better as a "traditional" story-driven RPG with characters I cared about and all that. I'd call Witcher 3 the better game, honestly, but I spent probably 10x as much time playing Skyrim. Doesn't really matter, though, because they're both amazing games. Skyrim, for me, was less of an "RPG" and more of a hiking and inventory management simulator set in a fantasy world.

But regardless, Game Informers list is total hogwash entirely due to lack of Shining Force or Lunar titles.

But, seriously ... Shining Force II's grid-based tactical combat was way ahead of its time and Lunar: Silver Star Story ushered in an era of cutscenes and voiced stories instead of text-boxes. Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete for Playstation remains my favorite RPG of all time.

and I'd throw King's Bounty in there since it has highest playtime for an rpg on my steam list although eso is catching up
(316 hrs vs 272 hrs)

and the Forgotten Realms games and HOMM3

I beg to differ strongly. And I absolutely love Witcher 3. Also, this list is kinda sketchy. I'm not seeing Disgaea 5 on that list, and that is considered o be the greatest Disgaea game to date (which I do agree with). Xenosaga 2 is also missing on that list and Pokémon X and Y (considered the best Pokémon games to date).

I LOVED that game, I was so little when I first played it I didn't understand it at all, I replayed it much later and could finally understand what was going on, the whole 1000 years of history after the intro cinematic and the game starting does not help.

stil, amazing game, shame they ran out of money and after the first disc its mostly disposition.
