Another 'difference between Magic and Elemental spell damage post' to clarify for 2017

SORRY THERES STILL SOME CONFUSION IT SEEMS

So, in particular, I want to play around with making a Frost focused Warden. (No I don't care if it's not a hard mode trials build shut up)
I want to mess around with +frost damage and (on frost damage:effect) gear and we still can't seem to figure out which spells are magic damage and which spells are elemental damage based on the weapon you have equipped in the destruction staff tree.

There seem's to be divided opinions on this. Some are saying the tooltip says Magic damage and thus, it doesn't matter which staff you have equipped. (Thus rendering every +frost damage gear set even more useless because there's like 4 frost spells in the entire game)

Some are saying Pulsar is and some are saying it isn't despite what the tooltip says.

We need some clarification. (And some more frost damage spells)

THANKS <3

When you have a frost staff equipped all the skills in the destro staff skill line will deal frost damage aside from Force Pulse (that still deals all 3 damage types) and Elemental Drain (which doesn't deal damage).

The tooltips change when you equip a staff.

Destro staff skills like Wall of Elements say Magic damage in the skill window because they do not check what type of staff you are using. When you equip a staff and look at the tooltip on your ability bar it will show it does the type of damage that corresponds to your staff. All destro staff skills ALWAYS will do Elemental damage.

    Great thanks for the feedback!

And further on this: If something is specifically +magic damage or (on magic damage: effect) not including +spell damage which is everything; Does it affect all elemental spells on the destruction staff line?

If something says it will increase magic dmg attacks, it won't increase elemental dmg.

If something says it increases frost/fire/lightning it will not increase pure magical attacks.

If something adds spell dmg, it increases both types of dmg ( magic and elemental ) and healing done.
So with sets that just push elemental dmg you will always have poor healing compared to a spell dmg set.
Often enough both dmg types are used, the exeption may be a pve dk.
So if unsure and don't want to cripple self heals, I'd say focusing on increased spell dmg is the more benefical way.

    1) Think of Magic as a 4th "element" apart from Fire, Ice and Shock.
    2) Pulsar/Elemental Ring is not Magic damage. It becomes elemental damage depending on the staff type you're wearing (check the tooltip on your skill bar and not just general tooltip).

Magicka attacks are based off the resource (and related stats), and any set that buffs such will work regardless of damage type.

Magic attacks are a damage type (generally derived from magicka anyways), and any set that mentions benefiting Magic attacks will NOT benefit fire/frost/shock (or other damage type, if applicable) unless also noted in the description as a benefactor of the buff.

They really shouldn't have called it Magic Damage :#
