Morrowind Starting Place

With Morrowind, it seems that the two new characters I've made started in Vvardenfell, but is there any way to get them to start in coldharbour or in the regular starter islands?

Indeed, you can then either move on to Vvardenfell, or take the next wayshrine to the mainland and proceed to meet your "mysterious benefactor" and do the old coldharbour way.

I prefer letter, since being a "vestige from coldharbour" explains all the respawning...
Also, it makes -way- more sense to experience the events of Morrowind -after- the classic mainstory, and orsinium, and the "prophecy" quest...

Personally I'd have left the coldharbour tutorial, and just added a shortcut for those who wanted a new character to jump right into vvardenfell, letting -everyone- go through the firemoth island if they so choose (as in, take a boat to vvardenfell, get shipwrecked and have to do firemoth even as experienced character...)
Oh, well. One can still do it, it just takes a bit more effort...

Not directly - when you finish the Firemoth Island, you'll meet a Hooded Figure asking you to meet her "benefactor". That's the start of the main story and will get you to Coldharbour..

I believe once you leave the island and go to a base game zone the prophet appears and starts that quest line.

You can start this quest by meeting the hooded figure as mentioned by Streega.

For DC characters you can find the hooded figure by tp to glenumbra. and go on the boats.

You don't need to finish anything.......you can go now to your starting city (Davon's Watch, Daggerfall, or Vulkel Guard) and talk to the hooded stranger. You will wind up in the Wailing Prison.

Hmm, maybe I wasn't super clear about the question. I meant like during character creation, is there anyway to get your character to start in the starter islands instead of firemoth?

Nope.
I really wish there was an option to choose, personally I think the story flows better starting out in Coldharbour.
