Are "Monster Trophies" Anything?

Hi, all -- Welcome to another dumb-ass question.

I've gotten a small number of oddball items labelled as "Monster Trophies" in the game as drops. Am I supposed to save these or do something with them? They don't seem to be anything that I can "Use" or put on display in my houses.... am I safe to sell these to a shop, or am I missing something here?

As I have always done, these "Monster Trophies" can be thought of as the same kind of items that say "Sell this to a Merchant for gold."

There was another thread I saw about this, I will edit this post later with the link.

EDIT: Here's a quote from the wonderful @MissBizz from this thread (be sure to click "show previous quotes"): https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/212623/monster-trophy-collections-way-to-screw-this-up-and-you-did/p1

    Hi everyone,

We’d like to provide a little insight and clarification on the upcoming changes to collectibles.

Currently, collectible trophies work differently for those obtained via fishing versus those obtained via monster kills. Fishing trophy collectibles grant the associated achievement upon item pick-up, whereas monster-kill trophy collectibles grant the associated achievement upon use. This difference was resulting in a high volume of bug reports and feedback in which players thought the collectible trophies were broken. That combined with the availability being limited by level-range prompted us to make the system more intuitive and uniform. That’s where the upcoming changes come in.

So what do those changes consist of? Here’s a short list:
    • All collectible trophies will now grant the associated achievement when the item is first looted.
    • Monster trophies will always drop off appropriate level monsters for your character. A game-wide audit was done to make sure that no matter what level you are, there is always a place you can go to work on collecting the trophy you are looking for.
    • Collectible trophies can no longer be banked and traded to another character.
We hope that helps clarify the changes. Please let us know if you have any questions!

Supposedly we can get ALL the collectibles at any level now.

As I understand it, look through the Achievement section of your journal for Monster Trophies. Each one is associated with an achievement, and once a trophy is placed in your inventory it counts towards that achievement. Then you are free to sell it for a good chunk of gold compared to regular items. Apparently, they cannot be banked so they would needlessly take up inventory space if you kept them.

I was told that these little non-bankable inventory killers can be put into our houses. Is that correct?

That is not correct. As of the Morrowind update there are "monster trophy" furniture items that can be obtained by doing normal group dungeons or trials, but that's not the same as the little blue-quality junk drops you get from killing monsters.

The blue items you get from killing mobs should be sold to an npc vendor. Then there is a dozen checklists in your journal achievements for various groups of trophies. Earning the item permanently marks it off the list.

When you get the full list of any, you get the achievement plus a color opened up. These are some of the hardest achievements in the game...two years in and my main only has one of the lists completed. Ugh.

This also includes rare fish. If you catch any rare fish it will tick it off in your achievements, and you can just sell them.

Add the bursts for doing veteran dungeon / trials we had since homestead.

And the monster trophy is confusing. I kept my forever thinking they might have some use.

Grinding just make you go in circles.

I'd love to be able to display some of these; the Murray Cod, for example, named after the Australian river of it's origin and pretty much an awesome keepsake for a bughunter due to the cultural misplacement when it drops outside places like High Isle's prison island. It's a very subtle issue but, interestingly something that might be of interest to some on the design team because they do often hit the nail on the head with things that are, culturally speaking (and, perhaps, literally) closer to home!

That said, little things like this can become keepsakes for a variety of reasons and maybe it would be a good idea to make trophies more than just an achievement checkbox and gold drop.

The option to convert trophies into a mounted piece for housing or stash them in a chest would be quite agreeable; if only because it would reduce some of the confusion caused by an object called "XYZ trophy" which can't be mounted on the wall to show it off (housing>>furniture) or added to a treasure hoard like, well, like what the meaning of the word "trophy" conveys....
