Penetration CP trait and non sharpened weapon?

One guild mate claimed that putting 48 CP into spell penetration he got better dps on dummy using an precise than sharpened staff.
Idea is interesting, even if not true it might be an solution for maelstrom and dropped set weapons.
You loose a bit because of 75 rather than 100 in the +damage and +crit damage node but not just 1% in one I understand.

With frontloaded CP the gap between Precis and Sharp became slightly smaller, but sharpened is still preferable for dps. Since you can but your CP into other stuff than Spell Penetration.

Thanks for this info. I have a precise bsw staff might work that into a build. I also sometimes use defending trait staff in pvp as it makes a lot of difference to how tanky I am so could use in that situation also.

As said, its probably not an good idea with an crafted staff but if you have an maelstrom or dropped set one it can be smart to test out.

Another question, for PvE DD is it any point putting any CP into penetration?
