They could tie recruitment to the guild traders. Add a button in the guild trader window that opens a page with a message from the guild master describing the guild, member requirements, and an option on that page to apply for admittance, which would be sent to a designated guild officer for review. And of course, that option could be turned off if the guild is not accepting new members at the time.

-group bonus for dailies or trials
-costumes
