instead of forcing us to kill an npc if they are in view of treasure we want to steal, how about knocking them out, so we can rob them, take their stuff, but not kill them
also, maybe make it like an option, instead of assassinate, we have knock out, like an item we equip or part of thief personality.

Hmm, interesting idea actually. I kind of like that!

Knocking someone out still poses a pretty strong chance of killing or permanently disabling them. Kill them, and be done with it.

I think this is a great idea and let me just add:
it should be something you can only do if you have Nightshade in your bag.
Really we do it without like, the musical instruments. This is the only musical: the mouth. And hopefully the brain attached to the mouth. Right? The brain, more important than the mouth, is the brain. The brain is much more important.

Killing them basically IS knocking them out. They pop back up in a couple of minutes.

This is a great idea. There are many possibilities here, for example, sap an NPC, but if the body is spotted while you are clearing out the loot, then you get hit with an increased penalty.

Hmmm not bad idea, although I prefer just killing them.

Being able to knock out npcs is a good idea, but DarcyMardin is right. They respawn in a few minutes anyway.

I want the ability to throw a distraction/noisemaker. Just a little aoe that "taunts" npcs to its location.

That sounds like fun. I want the ability to inappropriately grope npcs, but I'll settle for just being able to gank 'em.

they dont die, it just disables them temporarily, doesn't have to be long
they get back up eventually , so they wouldnt need to respawn

i guess the real issue would be all npcs having been knocked out and looted already, thats why you make it optional through an item or personality

I once had an idea of "subduing weapons" as part of my Additional Weapon Skill Ideas... things like truncheons, clubs, etc.

...I could easily see how doing an "blade of woe" type sneak attack with a subduing weapon equipped could be used for a "knockout"...

Another possibility would be making it a seperate skill, throwing a pouch of magical sleep powder at people, or tasering them with a dwemer artifact like that guard in Stros M'kai... as long as it wasn't usable in combat, and only on weak mobs, I see no issue...

It's an interesting idea and I'd like to see it implemented, if not for the fact that x is already shared by two abilities.

ZOS doesn't seem to care about woe and biting getting mixed up because reasons. The same reasons may prevent any more similar abilities to be introduced.

    Interesting idea OP.

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Rogue class had the Blackjack skill that stunned their target and prevented it from calling for help for 30s. Something along this line where the mob could be stunned or sapped, would give time to loot, open treasures and\or pp the npc.

If just a Thief or Dark Brotherhood Guild line skill with a unique weapon (a blackjack would do nicely), where the animation was a sneak up and sound clunk upside, atop or behind the npc's head with stars animation would do. When the stars began to fade, would be the warning the sap was wearing off.
