    Ha ha, yeah...

Basically, it involves rewriting conversations like this one in your head, pretending they went in a slightly different direction, and imagining what your character would have actually replied if given the chance.

Something like this: "Do you fancy yourself a Telvanni mage? I think not."

"You mean to say you do not recognize me, Savarak? I should split your head for your insolence!"

"I... of course. What do you require of me?"

You have no idea how many conversations with Naryu I've had to retcon on my defected Morag Tong assassin. XD
    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

Why would the NPC just assume that you are a Telvanni just by being given your name?

For all that he knows, you could be pretending to the title just to gain the (obvious) prestige and benefits of being a member of that House.

I gave up very early on for this sort of thing. I recall doing a quest in Stonefalls that involved Dunmer, Argonians and a burnt village. The Dunmer weren't being reasonable with the Argonians so the Argonians had me talk to them on their behalf. I was getting excited for them to say "because you're a Dunmer, so of course they'll listen!" and it was just something like "because you're a stranger".

Really we do it without like, the musical instruments. This is the only musical: the mouth. And hopefully the brain attached to the mouth. Right? The brain, more important than the mouth, is the brain. The brain is much more important.

Roleplaying in any MMO has always required taking the quest dialogue with something of a grain of salt. It's rare that ESO changes the dialogue for a specific race. I, personally, am more concerned with my reputataion being known by the NPCs than my race, but that's just how it is.

1: That the Prophet Most Simian demonstrated that monothought begets Proper-Life.

They should just rewrite every line of dialogue to be from a Telvanni perspective. The N'wahs must burn.

No but seriously, I would love the ability to join House Telvanni as an in-game guild, granting us unique dialogue. That'd be awesome. The same should go for the other "Great" (*cough* N'wah-loving *cough*) Houses.

This is kind of what I was hinting at above.

It would be really nice if we could actually join House Telvanni (or one of the other great Houses if you are a foolish s'wit) and have the NPC dialogue (and responses - positive or negative) reflect that. It would be more work but it would give a much better sense of actually being part of the world.

We can be part of one of the three alliances at character creation, we can join the Mages Guild, Fighters Guild, Thieves Guild and even the Dark Brotherhood (should our character be homicidal maniac) but being an active agent in the Dunmeri great Houses is out of our reach?

    Pffft.

Yeah, it made me so mad having to
help that Argonian S'wit advance in House Telvanni instead of my character. If I can set everything up for that Scaleback slave to progress, then there is no way my Dunmer mage couldn't join.

Where is the LOL button?

Great House surnames are actually quite common, and they don't necessarily affiliate you with said house (or any specific NPC). If someone had the last name of "Smith", does that tie them to every "Smith" on Earth? No. Beyond that, choosing almost any lore-friendly surname makes your character related to an NPC. Where else would the surname come from? (Unless you make one up)

I took an insane route towards this.

After reading that the Dunmeri surnames in Arena and Daggerfall were based on a prefix/suffix system I set out to do the same with the family names in TESIII. I analysed the common substrings within all of the surnames listed here and then looked at their geographical distribution.

That way I could create my own Dunmeri surname based on the fragments seen around the Telvanni areas (Sadrith Mora, Tel Fyr, Tel Aruhn, Tel Uvirith, Tel Mora, Vos and Tel Vos) without actually being a direct copy.

...I would not recommend this approach to anyone else however.

Fair enough, but that still doesn't mean having the surname of "Telvanni" makes for bad RP. There are plenty of peasants throughout the games with Great House surnames. The name clearly doesn't give them any discernable advantage. It is not like they said, "Yeah, I am a clone of Divayth Fyr but also one of VEHK and Bal's offspring. And I am Gothren's cousin." They chose to use a relatively common Dunmer surname that helps you to have a better understanding of what their character is about.

    Is it relatively common?

I only ask because I went back through my NPC lists and I can't find a single NPCs named Telvanni... before ESO. Even in ESO I can only find 7 (in the pre-Vvardenfell regions). All of this is, of course, on the assumption that my source (UESP) is not in error. Do you know of others?

I meant Great House surnames as a whole, of which there are many examples. While it is true that the Telvanni surname is less common, the point still stands that it doesn't force you into close relations with any particular NPC. It isn't a unique name like "Fyr" that can be easily associated with one NPC and his 'family' (I use that term loosely); it is, rather, a family name like any other.

It is a name that can be spread throughout Tamriel like any real-life name can be throughout a continent. People don't associate themselves with everyone of their surname, as I mentioned earlier. This is no different. Choosing the Telvanni surname doesn't pidgeonhole you into being related to "Billy" Telvanni and "Sally" Telvanni. It is, rather, a tool to express your character with the thing people notice first: their name.

I would also like to add that attributing the backstory of a character to a faction is not bad RP either. In fact, it can make for some very interesting character quirks, like my Altmer scholar who was effectively raised inside a Mages Guild hall, and thus has some very peculiar impressions about society in general and privacy in particular.

That's what House Telvanni is: a faction. And one of the most interesting ones for a Dunmer character, imo. The character doesn't have to be directly related to any particular Telvanni character in the game to still identify with the faction, which is really what the OP's particular issue is.

I can't wait for my Telvanni to get there, she spent way too much time consorting with... I mean "studying" Nord culture and got herself kicked out. (She's not particularly fond of them, either.) So, "do you fancy yourself a Telvanni mage?" will have delicious dose of headcanon irony.
