No but seriously, I would love the ability to join House Telvanni as an in-game guild, granting us unique dialogue. That'd be awesome. The same should go for the other "Great" (*cough* N'wah-loving *cough*) Houses.

This is kind of what I was hinting at above.
It would be really nice if we could actually join House Telvanni (or one of the other great Houses if you are a foolish s'wit) and have the NPC dialogue (and responses - positive or negative) reflect that. It would be more work but it would give a much better sense of actually being part of the world.
We can be part of one of the three alliances at character creation, we can join the Mages Guild, Fighters Guild, Thieves Guild and even the Dark Brotherhood (should our character be homicidal maniac) but being an active agent in the Dunmeri great Houses is out of our reach?
Pffft.

Where is the LOL button?
Great House surnames are actually quite common, and they don't necessarily affiliate you with said house (or any specific NPC). If someone had the last name of "Smith", does that tie them to every "Smith" on Earth? No. Beyond that, choosing almost any lore-friendly surname makes your character related to an NPC. Where else would the surname come from? (Unless you make one up)

I took an insane route towards this.
After reading that the Dunmeri surnames in Arena and Daggerfall were based on a prefix/suffix system I set out to do the same with the family names in TESIII. I analysed the common substrings within all of the surnames listed here and then looked at their geographical distribution.
That way I could create my own Dunmeri surname based on the fragments seen around the Telvanni areas (Sadrith Mora, Tel Fyr, Tel Aruhn, Tel Uvirith, Tel Mora, Vos and Tel Vos) without actually being a direct copy.
...I would not recommend this approach to anyone else however.

Fair enough, but that still doesn't mean having the surname of "Telvanni" makes for bad RP. There are plenty of peasants throughout the games with Great House surnames. The name clearly doesn't give them any discernable advantage. It is not like they said, "Yeah, I am a clone of Divayth Fyr but also one of VEHK and Bal's offspring. And I am Gothren's cousin." They chose to use a relatively common Dunmer surname that helps you to have a better understanding of what their character is about.

Is it relatively common?
I only ask because I went back through my NPC lists and I can't find a single NPCs named Telvanni... before ESO. Even in ESO I can only find 7 (in the pre-Vvardenfell regions). All of this is, of course, on the assumption that my source (UESP) is not in error. Do you know of others?
...how one even does it? I mean... So very, very awkward
