Wear med armor...now you have to wear the armor types to gain its skill line. You also have to use a weapon and kill with it to gain its skill line (unless they changed that back.)

what was this deemed necessary? Was it an attempt to unclutter the interface? The could have done a click to hid/expand on the skill lines for the UI.

I think you have to wear at least a certain amount of pieces..
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

You need three pieces equipped, if I'm not mistaken.

To quote General Longstreet in the movie Gettysburg, "to trivialize the momentus and complicate the obvious." A lot of us complained this would confuse new and old players alike. Also, your racial passives should be hidden until you level to level 5.

You have to put 3 of the armor on before it unlocks..

So, rather than see it, new players have to find it by:

Putting on 3 Light armor to unlock Light
Putting on 3 Med armor to unlock Medium
Putting on 3 Heavy armor to unlock Heavy

How that is supposed to "help" new players see the benefits of an armor line if they never played a MMO is beyond me.
Power level to CP160 in a week:
Where is the end game? You just played it.
Why don't I have 300+ skill points? Because you skipped content along the way.
    Where is new content? Sigh.

You need to wear 3 pieces at least, yes.

And this is exactly why this was an incredibly dumb idea.

Yeah, they went from "waaay too many skill lines at the start confuses brand new players" to "no visible skill lines or any way to know they exist/how to make them visible confuses new - and other - players". Brilliant.

I think it's just "put on 3 pieces, skill line appears", not "you have to always wear 3 pieces of armor".
    ----

    From the patch notes:
Skill lines will now unlock when your character takes specific actions.

Armor skill lines unlock when you equip 3 pieces of a given armor type (light/medium/heavy).
Weapon skill lines unlock when you get a killing blow while the weapon is equipped.
Crafting skill lines are unlocked when you visit the appropriate crafting station.
Your racial skill line unlocks at level 5.
The AvA skill lines now unlock when you gain Alliance Points.
Other skill lines will continue to unlock as they did previously, such as the Mages Guild skill line when you join the guild.

There was a long feedback thread on this in PTS. While some posters thought it was a good change, most did not. Looks like ZoS did not agree with the feedback there.

At least in the new tutorial there is a hut you can lockpick your way into and pick up a sample of every weapon. Then you just go out to kill shroom beetles once with each weapon and you have the lines unlocked. Tedious but doable. Armor is trickier, unless you have a crafting friend/alt to make you cheap pieces to put on it will take a while before quest rewards and random drops open the lines. However, it seems you still can advance the skill level by wearing just one piece, you simply can't put skill points into the passives until you get three pieces on at once.
