Is this a known thing?

Is the Steam Key usable with just a regular PC install(not on Steam)?

Well you can link your regular ESO account to steam, which then you could use the steam key. But a steam key won't work right on the ESO website as far as I know.

I bought a second account from steam and just copied the key and put in eso thingy and thingy worked fine just like first account from Amazon. Its only a matter of where you activate the key.If nothing else ask GameStop and say I am confused.

Well if you link your current account to steam, THEN it should work (via steam)

@Tasear When was this? Before they changed how steam and ESO accounts link back in November?

Hmm, I think around Halloween. Bought on steam, right click copy key, then go to eso website and paste in account.

How do I link the ESO account to Steam?

I went in to Steam, identified my 2 ESO .exe (launcher and eso64), then tried to buy update and Steam said didn't have ESO so no purchase available????

Yeah, you have to rebuy the game on Steam. The Steam ESO process is all sorts of messed up. You can link your Steam TESO:U purchase to your existing ESO account (effectively buying the game twice), but if you decide to unlink from Steam, that's not possible, at which point you can only play that account through Steam (even though it was initially bought directly from ZOS). It's just a nightmare, steer clear of the Steam ESO.

Yeah, which is why I have not so far as well. But need to know if a Morrowind upgrade code bought on Amazon will work in the ESO store, so I don't have to buy the game again on Steam.

    Unfortunately : NO.

Amazon is Steam code too, states DRM: Steam.

Here's Steam's reply to me when asked for help:

"The DLC you are trying to purchase is for additional bonus content for the base game.

You must register or purchase the base game on Steam before you will be able to purchase bonus content to your account.

If your CD Key can be registered with Steam, it should be labeled as such on the retail packaging or by the online retailer.

Only valid Steam keys can be added by using the '+add a game' feature within the lower left portion of the Steam client.

Check out our Retail Activation Keys (CD Keys) article for more information.

If the issue continues, we recommend contacting the retailer for further assistance.

Little late to the game here but here's what I know.
    - Yes you have to rebuy the game on steam to link it. I bought the gold edition because I unsubbed for a few months and wanted to keep DLC access.
    - Even though you can't "unlink" from steam you can absolutely keep playing without steam. I do it all the time on my travel laptops.
    - I am not preordering Morrowind so IDK how that works through steam but with the update today there is an "Upgrade" button on the character select screen that I imagine links to the Morrowind purchase page in Steam.

I prepurchased Morrowind on Gamestop's website. They sent me a steam key with instructions on how to use it on steam. I went to my account page on elderscrollsonline.com and attempted to apply the Steam key under Redeem Code... it took me to another page asking me if I want to include a further subscription. I clicked no sub as I already have one, then I confirmed, and here I am... playing Morrowind without going through Steam.

I can say applying it right to the website redeem code does work for Steam keys given through Gamestop. I can't say on any others.

Ah, wish I had known earlier. Thanks though. I pulled the trigger and paid cash directly instead of going through Amazon.
