Maybe ZOS is using a domestic broadband connection to keep costs down. I can't understand why they kick us at all.
Even on the internet, clear communication is important; it can be the difference between "helping your Uncle Jack off a horse" and "helping your uncle jack off a horse"; the difference between "knowing your s***" and "knowing you're s***".

Because constant up time is an issue. Also, to prevent you from going AFK while your buddy farms, and reaping the rewards for hours. But, mostly because, yes, if you're logged in it is costing ZOS money. Not, you know, a lot, but it can easily stack up. Also, if you let players simply sit around in the inn, it will also push the server capacity, because there are plenty of idiots who would just sit there without logging out.

Finally it serves as a safety valve. If the game crashes, or something else happens, and you're booted from the game, but the game doesn't realize this, you'd simply sit there forever without getting kicked.

All of that said, it is probably a bit too short. Especially from the login screen.

Have to ask how long do you spend browsing a guild store?

Have never found the timer to DC inactives an issue. Only time I get DCed for inactivity is when I have run out to get some food and well, that makes sense.

Yes, I can go out and take an smoke, toilet or grab something to eat with no issues , 4-5 minutes.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Is this not what that kid complained about a few days ago too? That the inactivity timer kicked him.. From that post we learned that you get kicked after 20 minutes.. So move around a little

@ZOS_GinaBruno , This is actually really important, and should be looked into. The inactivity timer NEEDS to be extended to a minimum of 1 hour, maybe even 2 hours. Everyone sometimes check forums, look up music in the background for example, but in addition to that, you need to check on ESO again ASAP, or else you'll be kicked and have to log back in again, and again and again. The time when choosing a character is also ridiculously short at the moment. The short time we got on us NEEDS to be extended. Even 30 minutes, and even if it was ESO+ only, I'd be happy to read the news about the patch notes.

Even now when typing this, I had to check back out and in of ESO, as.. yes, players are getting afraid of typing or checking something out, since the idle timer is such ridiculously short. 5 and 15 Minutes is WAY too short. If this is for PVP, please make a timeout rule that ONLY applies in PVP, cause not everyone is interested in PVP.

Please, fix this issue. I know you can do it.

Inactivity is not a spectrum. You're either actively playing the game, or you aren't.
You still have ample wiggle room for a restroom or snack break. But you wouldn't go to the movies then sit on the can browsing Instagram for half of it. Don't expect other people to manage your priorities.

Isn't it pretty long, something like 15 minutes? Why on Earth would you want to be logged in in the game for an hour when you aren't as much as making a step or anything during that hour?o.O If you wanna take an hour or two break from the game, then just log off then log back when you feel like playing again, logging in takes like 2 minutes.

I think it'd be super annoying seeing all those "online" friends that just forgot they had game open at all, not to mention extra strain on the server. I've never once had an issue with inacitivity timer, imo it's at the sensible limit where you either pop back in the game and check on things happening(possibly 25 people trying to get in touch with "online" you) or you get kicked and everyone knows you're not available.

Now the character select timer is like 3 mins and is pretty annoying, I'm not sure why it's so different from ingame one, is it more taxing for the server or something?

It's annoying . I don't know why ZoS doesn't just turn off XP and AP gains to players inactive for more then the timer instead of kicking . That would solve the bot problem partially . Bots users can run programs to keep from getting kicked , that timer does nothing to stop that . If there were no group XP gains for inactive group members then the problem would mostly go away . Instead we have this annoying kick if your browsing prices for a rare item on vendors or just sitting in your house with a friend talking over comms . Pointless to make players run around to stay logged in as that does not solve the actual issue of exploits Afk .

I can understand having an idle kick timer. That being said, I definitely feel it is far too short of a time to be reasonable. I myself have been victim to the Bio-break disconnect. I believe it's currently @ 5 minutes before getting booted to the log in screen? (Possibly 10). I feel 15 minutes would be a an adequate amount of time before being turfed from the server due to inactivity.

I'm surprised to see that there's a definitive timer for the idle kick. I'll have to keep a closer eye on it, but it sure seems that I get kicked at varying time lengths, and sometimes it may be 5-10 minutes or longer, and other times it's less than that...hmmm

I understand the need for afk kick. but if I'm chatting in guild chat, or browsing though guild store, or going through my menus for instance - I'm obviously not afk. while I wouldn't say they need to extend the timer, it WOULD be nice if they added activities where your character might not be moving around, but player is still doing something in game

edited to add. my biggest problem is not in game afk kick. its the character selection kick. sometimes it seems to have no wiggle room at all. like I could be in character selection, deciding which character i want to hop on.. and 30 seconds later - I'm kicked to login screen. it needs to be at least 5 minutes. IMO.
