My Cyrodiil Visit

Well, with the upcoming patch, I am doing and trying things all over the game because I may drop it. Not what this is about but what prompted me to travel to this war torn area of the world. Not sure what I was expecting but was surprised I didn't get jumped after the stories I've heard. I thought nightblades were making life miserable for everyone all the time. Eh. I think I did the 7 day campaign (really didn't pay much attention except play population). I actually thought I had picked the sub 50 since my guy was just level 10. Like to have never remembered how to get to Cyrodiil. Not sure if there's an overland method but I finally remember the campaigns.

One thing, I was so lost. Not in terms of world space but what I was supposed to do after training. Like, I had no idea how a catapult is supposed to work. I mean, I know what they do and how to fire them. But no idea how long it takes and what I'm actually doing. What happens when a wall comes down, is it actually down or am I just using the door. I bought me up some repair kits of all types but ran out of cash before I could buy anything like that. Happily, I got one as a drop after clearing a dolman (by myself without being attacked again... level 10s are awesome, I wish I could just stop there). I fired the thing (I can't spell it but takes a long time to fire and reset. A bit like a catapult.) and after three shots, during which I had to NPCs to kill, it just disappeared. No idea where or what happened to it.

So, I had no idea if anyone was attacking anything. No idea how to attack anything (did finally run across a flag in a little town). I just seemed to travel and travel. I started at the bottom of the map and went around the lake through Covenant land (my guy was Bosmer) and into the Pact's. Rivers are full of slaughterfish. It was a bit boring to be honest. Went to Imperial City for a bit then back because I didn't want to start that questline. Never saw anyone there either but was there long. I did pick up my Alliance skill lines and added the first one of each with the points they gave me. I did have that strange lag or whatever concerning the ground. It would just have these patches with no detail I kind of sunk into. That was only after I died.

Yep, dead. From the fish. Life is empty in Cyrodiil. I finally ran across someone and they were on my side. Tried to keep up but level 10. Slow mount. Got to a farm where those guys I met before may have come or it was another set of guys. Got to help kill the guards and get rid of that nasty Pack banner. Stood around a bit watching the little graphic. As time went on, I started finding more people. I see quests open up when you claim a town but no idea what happens if you lose it during the quest. Does it disappear or you can turn it or are they always there. Just more questions and the people I asked didn't seem to know any more than I did.

As I kept going, we finally started to get more people on. Areas started coming under our control more and more. Still had no idea how that actually worked. The idea of siege warfare sounds great to me. I like to see that first hand or to at least find some method of figuring it out. I am not one for PvP. I think if they just had siege and then last ditch effort is the PvP would make more sense. But, since I never saw a siege, I have no idea if it is actually fun. Eventually, I had started finding more people and more enemies. Then that feeling hit. The feeling of what was the next town/farm/mine to liberate. I used to live for PvP. That was my game. But I didn't like the way I'd feel during it or the frustration that comes along with it. I don't want to hate a class (or worse, the player) because that poisons the game a bit for me since I like playing all classes. But there it was. That need to keep going to keep earning these points I saw very little use for.

Still though, I wish Cyrodiil was PvE and we just had three or more battlegrounds like WoW has (the big ones). Open world is only fun when the open world is getting used. Maybe things are different in other campaigns but I remember hearing about a bridge and wanting to find it. I'm here and don't mind dying. I did find a bridge outside the Dominion's controlled area some CP600 was controlling. People didn't just all attack him. I kept trying because I believe he was a nightblade and I wanted to see what skills he was using. After about the sixth death, he finally stopped. I think he just realized I was level 12. But that was no fun so I popped him with my bow. Didn't see a single bit of health fall. Tried an ability. The same. He finally got his resolve up and just fired his spectral bow and killed me again. Studied the death results and decided to log. Brought one of my high levels to the regular campaign (any level, CPs included) but was a bit bored with this place. It seemed like so much space with no use. Never found quest hubs until liberated towns counted but they were full of dailies or repeatables.

I guess I'll play enough to max the skill lines and that will be it. I do like large scale PvP. I like the idea of siege engines. Just not sure if this is the best way to accomplish that. But anyone worried about Cyrodiil, don't be. I guess the right campaign can have you hardly ever encountering another player on any side. Might not be able to free a town but I think they may only open up the repeatable quests not the story quests. That's assuming there is a story here (there is in Imperial City). I didn't find any unless you count training. Overall, I could see myself getting drawn back into the PvP playstyle but nah, not Cyrodiil. I'm going to have to learn more about playing but already I think open world sucks (it does on WoW). I can guess you either have no one to fight with or you're just totally outnumbered or out classed. 40 people on each side in a large but contained areas with objectives just sounds so much better. Not sure what the hope for Cyrodiil was but I can't say I'm a fan. Imperial City looks like it may have some promise though.

Good on you for giving it a try. That said, it sounds like you logged into a buff server. Buff servers are usually dominated by one alliance and provide little in the way of fighting.

To know if you're going into a buff server or not make sure you check the campaign screen. You will see 3 circles. If you want big fights log into one with 3 full circles on each.

It kind of sounds like you really should have gone there with a friend/guild. Cyrodiil is extremely confusing at first sight, the tutorial is actually pretty good but there're SO many other things you need to know.

Far as general emptiness goes, their servers are evidently not capable of supporting a large number of people at once (anymore) so we have fairly low population caps and most of the map is fairly empty most of the time with the action usually being centered around a few key keeps, with occasional brave small man trying for something very out of the way for glory, ap and possible distraction, or Emperor pushes. There's actually some strategy involved if there're organized groups running, that aside, the majority mindlessly goes wherever. There isn't much you can do alone unless you're really good, let alone at level 10, so I strongly recommend a group, ideally with friends or guildies who won't mind explaining what it's all about to you.

For action, watch the map. If a keep next to one of your keeps changed color, it's possible the next one will follow soon. Often people take resources around the keep first, giving a kind of warning. An alliance will get an Emperor if it has all the keeps of the central ring, so if one alliance has 4/6 central keeps they will likely try to push the other 2. There're bonuses for taking a scroll of another alliance from its scroll temple, in order for that to be possible 2 gate keeps must be taken, the one right next to the gate and the next one. So if one of them is taken it's a safe bet the other is gonna be attacked soon too. The routes to such places are also where most gankers dwell ;) But yeah, join a group/friend and give it another try, I strongly recommend <lvl 50/no cp campaign at low level/cp though.

Yeah, I got my level when he hit level 10 and so did it on a whim. Its absolutely nothing like you've heard was my first thought. One thing I struggled with is the how easy it is to get around in the 'real' world then you come to Cyrodiil and suddenly everything is travel time just to port around. Didn't care for that. Still, I'd like to see the whole place lit up and alive. Even my elves get tired or scenery after a bit.

Sadly both Cyrodil and Imperial City are in desperate need for a massive overhaul, but they're unlikely to get it unless more people start spreading the word and pressuring the issue.

The primary problem with Cyrodiil, from my perspective, is the lack of objectives away from keeps. Places like Bruma just are not enough to spread the fighting around. It is a shame the vast majority of activity is centered around the keeps. I realize this is the game mechanics. Nonetheless this mechanic combined with Forward Camps pretty much negates the need to be or fight anywhere else.

    Possible solutions could be to:
    • Make all Mile Gates controllable, lockable and destructable.
    • Make keep resources much further from keeps
    • Place objectives or convert small towns and other structures like farms and mines etc., into meaningful campaign objectives that effect the keeps they belong to.

Hey all. I'm back from another thrilling visit to Cyrodiil. I decided to take some time off from my warden and get back to my main character. So, I switched from magicka back to stamina nightblade. I had done a few battlegrounds (btw ZOS, your group finder be broke) and decided to pay a visit to Cyrodiil to see about getting Vigor (not yet, man does it take forever). I ended up spending the whole day there. Capturing keeps. Doing a few quests. Killing some players that were just trying to mind their own business. I did feel bad about that one guy from the Dominion I ran into in a delve. So if you're reading this. I was pretty sure you shot first but I hate that I screwed your questing. I'm just running scared, you see.

I think I got a pretty decent build this time. Well, for PvE. I died so much. And people burned so many gems on me. Ouch. But even though I didn't do great, I had a good time. Got to see my first siege... partly. Enough to see how it works now. I'm starting to understand how to read the map. But I mostly just went to keeps near enemies to see if there was any fighting. I'll tell you, I don't know how people play so well. It was like anyone looked at me and the damage recap was there before I knew it. I'm not the most coordinated person. PvP really demands it. Doesn't mean it can't be a good time.

I choose Vivec due to it looked the busiest and I like my CP. I did get to met a lot of new faces. Especially in the battlegrounds. Selene, Viper, Tremorscale. Those guys were in almost every battleground I entered. Viper gave me a little hug very often which was nice. I like the bear. Oh, I was on a winning team for once too. And I liked my score well enough. Viper is really popular. I met him in Cyrodiil a couple of time too. I have figured out that nightblades don't kill you. Neither do templars. Sorcerers and dragonknights have bullets with your name on them. Especially those sorcerers. All kinds of spell usage there.

Thought I'd share another self involved tidbit of my game. I better stop since people don't like to read long things. Maybe one day I'll invest in some decent PvP gear with inpen on it and pick me out a nice suit that does the killing for me. Those are cool. Especially for someone like me who can't figure out which button I'm pushing. Oh, and yeah, stamina is a problem but I stayed dead so much it refilled quite nicely. I think that may have been the thought process behind the devs decision in this patch. Cheap resource regen when you die but I guess it could get a nerf too. We'll just have to wait and see.

Viper was all over those battlegrounds I was in today. It was the first day I'd seen those on a death recap. A few recaps had two of em on it. But viper was hugely popular. The only other one I saw in Cyrodiil was tremorscale. Most deaths there were class skills or heavy attacks. But the battlegrounds were completely different.
