Pelinal Aptitude set more viable now with Morrowind changes?

The 5 piece bonus of this set changes your Weapon and Spell Damage to whichever value is the highest. In theory it is supposed to promote the viability of hybrid builds but in practice to maximize DPS players choose other sets.

With the nerfs to regeneration in Morrowind in theory Pelinal's Aptitude could become a viable set since it allows you to deplete both your Stamina and Magicka resource pools together before you start to worry about regeneration. Optimized builds would utilize both Stamina and Magicka skills. For example, a NB could spam Surprise Attack until their Stamina runs low and which point they switch to spamming Funnel Health until their Magicka runs low.

Optimization is the problem here. The shared dmg from weapon/spell is only one factor contributing to ability outcome. The other is scaling from your max ressource pool. So, yeah if its just about a better health through selfheals or using a cheap skill scaling of "the other" ressource pool once in a while, one might find a suitable optimum. However dmg without max ressource pool is still rather meh, especially when one takes into account that you loose out on other possible 5-piece setboni when using pelinals.

Currently I do play with pelinals (primarly bc I gain access to heals this way)... I use a 1:3 (mag:stam) setup with 3080 weapon dmg (and spell dmg bc of pelinals). There is still some optimization possible as I only use a subpar proc set, supporting my stamina abilities and giving one weapon damage boni. However, my stam-based damage feels ok in live and the proc set has a chance to proc often. So its fine on live.

Using this same setup in PTS is discouraging. Overall damage is reduced by 25-30%. Simply spoken, going to PVP like that isn't worth the trouble (I will NOT be able to kill anyone with the damge I currently can produce - neither can I just step over to healbot-tactic and hope for a friend to kill the attacker) and i doubt my solo adventures to imperial city will get me anything but hardship (currently i actually enjoy turning districts once in a while just to start mindless telvar farming). If I like to deal dmg after this PTS goes live, I will have to either roll back to one ressouce pool or build a hybrid based on 5-piece sets pushing damage double and one supporting mag and the other stam - just to maybe get somewhat close to what I have now. Still trying to figure how to gear, atm.

    Well, my 2 cents

I'll pass. I've been in multiple MMO betas over the years and they all end up making the game less exiciting when it's eventually released.

I just mentioned this as an option because I've read numerous rants about the changes to resource regeneration. The Pelinal's Aptitude set seems like one option to mitigate the impact of the regeneration nerf. It would have the side benefit of adding a lot of flexibility to build choices.

Needs the 5pc to affect penetration as well as power

True that is another approach... but is it worth trading max resources or weapon/spell dmg for penetration ?

For Stam NB it's usually more efficient to use magica for utility and stam skills for damage.

As a Mag NB I think you would want Max Mag for your shileds and heals, leaving your stam resources too low to do more than a few attacks.

Then also you have to swap bars whenever you want to use heavy attacks to get back the resource that is low.

I guess it's possible - but seems a bit too complicated.

And yes, unfortunately that missing 5-piece bonus is a missing 400 weapon or spell damage points (or penetration if you go that way)
