Steam controller configuration question

Hey guys... we didn't get eso through steam, but want to use our ps4 controllers in eso.
Steam''s big picture mode controller support works fine after adding eso to steam''s library, but it does not "remember" the controller configuration if we shut steam down.
Steam does remember it for all our other games, just not eso.
Is there a recommended way to get the controller configuration to stick in steam for eso, or do we need to use something like input mapper instead?
(We'd prefer to use steam to launch and manage it if possible, since the high precision mode only needs one change for perfect control support.
