Did I miss something? What's the appeal of having a house in ESO? Does this affect your stats, or is this just a role playing thing?

The point of housing is housing. Rp, cool shiny things, decorating, showing it off to your friends...you know, Elder Sims Online kind of thing :p
Among actually useful things it has to offer - you can place target skeletons for dps testing there, can also place crafting stations and even crafting stations attuned to specific sets. That's about it.

It can be an RP thing, some people use them as guild homes, others may just use them to kill time. They don't appeal to me really, but I can see why they might for some. I planned on getting one just for the DPS dummy, but a guild I'm in has 5 or 6 of them so no point really.

Until they add some storage, housing is fairly useless. I do my dps checks on players and I have all my crafting done for me. About the only thing in my house that I use is my Emperor throne. I like to just sit in it. With no one around. So that I can....nvmd thats useless too hah.

they are so small compared to eq2 and the price are deep.

where are the "island sized" home plot?

i dont get it, i just got a room in the Inn/Taverns, and other small house version cost more and they are about same size.

The point of housing in ESO is everything, other than what a house really is used for.... storing all of your personal stuff, which is a face-palm move. Anybody can try and talk me against this.
"But you can put furniture down!".

If only they'd add mannequins we can hang up gear sets on, and simply switch outfits by interacting with them. That's a way to "add" storage without it being simply a barrel that happens to be a bag of holding in disguise.

Edit: and if you need to place your outfit in your inventory instead of switching, just add an option to a flyout menu for said mannequins.

For a storyteller like me it's heaven sent, if you don't like it then it just ain't aimed at you is all, there are things that I find pointless for example, like vet MoL, wanting that level of masochistic content is utterly inexplicable to me o:)

Fun to decorate, can invite people over and be idiots, and makes for a nice quiet place to dye your costumes in.

Maybe one day they'll make the houses properly awesome, with interactive things (holding out hope for this).

I use them for anywhere free ports. I port just across the street from the back and crafting. That's used a lot. I put stuff in them I sort of don't know what to do with them beyond that. They need more personality or something. I can see why people want storage in them because I wished I had dummies to put unused armor on so which is a form or storage I guess. I don't have the decorating gene so prefinished was how I went but still haven't found something that works for me. Accidently picked up the carpet and had a devil of the time putting it back. And that just lays on the floor. Pathetic I know.

I think the only point of housing is if you're a person who enjoys having a house you can decorate, maybe share with friends or a guild, then it's fun for you. Otherwise not so much.

None, but I have to say that even though it is completely pointless by a usability standpoint - I'm starting to have fun decorating mine.

So the OP doesn't see any point in housing. Fair enough, each to their own. There are lots of things in the game I don't see the point of (i.e. dueling, PVP, Imperial City, TG, DB, vMSA, etc.) but other players might enjoy them.

If you don't like housing, leave it alone and just do what you enjoy - no need to question why it exists.

The point of housing is to burn crowns.

Once crown burning slows in this regard, they will add bank space based on what housing you have. i.e. small house, 5 slots
bank space, 10 slots for a medium house, 15 for a large...etc or something of that nature.

I'm not saying they are evil, I'm saying, that's what I would do if I were getting the pressures I suspect they are getting from their bosses..

TBH didn't see much point in housing initially. But since I learnt how to make gold fast I decided to buy houses and have some fun decorating. It has actually been a lot of fun decorating. I built mazes and even big rooms in the sky. I have had about 15 visitors or so which enjoyed checking it out. I also like to visit other players homes and check how creative they got with their decorating. It also gave me a reason to do quests since I seemed to stop questing after the main story and focus on pvp and pve trials. I have to do another 30 quests just so can purchase hundings. By the time I am finished The quests should have at least a 3 million decoration budget to work with. Also trying to decide if I tear down some of the stuff from my first place and move it to my new one.

The appeal for me for the houses I currently own:

    1. Mara's Kiss = came with the quest. I have a candle and skull in there. Does nothing really.
    2. Black Vine Villa = This is one of the best places for me to do my looting/pick pocketing/killing (in the Baandari Trading Post). The area has fast respawns of NPCs you can do stuff to and in the unlikely event you just happen to get aggroed, your home is just a quick run away.
    3. Sleek Creek = It has a water feature that I found appealing and... well... I'm AD all the way so I can't buy any other houses. Its also where I roleplay as a skooma dealer.
    4. Hunding's Palatial Hall = Even though its out of the way, it just has a really nice space to work with and there's a beach. I wanted to try doing some weird things with the outside (like have a barbecue area and a wedding oriented area, there's a fountain too).

Ultimately, all of it really does not have much functionality in and of itself other than decorative and a place to put workstations (which is somewhat useful but not by much) but hey, its just another aspect of ESO and if you have the gold/crowns to play around and if you want to take a break from the usual PvE-PvP experience, this is an okay distraction.
