Can We Just Do Away With CP Levels On Gear?

Maybe just leave it level 1-50, and add a new system to crafting to further boost gear or add a second trait... RNG is awful, but it's even worse to farm hundreds of hours, only for your gear to be rendered obsolete by an increase in gear cp level cap... But let's not forget how that also segregates new players from veteran players in end game content, like trials...

Edit: To those of you who vote leave it as is, are you cool with Zos raising cp level cap on gear, forcing you to have to rng everything again?

I'll go one further. We should remove "levels" from gear. There's no reason to have 15 different "qualities" of iron armor. So you just have iron armor and weapons, steel, armor and weapons, ect.

OP I agree, when you make a new character you should get:

an urn item that has a potion to boost your level to level 50.
a sharpened vMA weapon (determined by your class, but still random)
a full set of level 50 gear (all legendary)
    a mount
a new home ( so if you already have the inn rooms you will get something else)

    ... oh wait

hundreds of hours to have your gear outleveled? What game are you playing?

You level so quickly up until 160. I got my friend from level 30 to cp 160 in less than 10 hours of grinding (granted this is with potions and training gear, and I carried him) but still hundreds?

I would rather levels be removed from gear. It makes no sense. I'm completely fine with crafting better gear, but it makes no sense there are several levels per material.

I get why developers do it, but it's a mechanic that's far, far outlived its usefulness other than to give people busy work.

It has NOT outlived it usefulness for NEW players. Why should a new player come in and instantly gain equipment that never out-levels? Where is the character progression of the game? As it is One Tamriel already killed gear progression beyond CP160. For me, with a new character, I ONLY change gear every ten levels (every new material), there is absolutely NO REASON with One Tamriel to change your gear any sooner. What I don't like is how I'm forced to change appearance every new material... some of the lower level gear looks a LOT better than high level gear IMO... but you cannot craft CP160 Iron gear. That, to me, is the biggest let down of the whole material progression aspect.

I used to run medium armor, now I run light - so I can't speak to heavy armor. What frustrated me was that in order to upgrade to better gear I had to surrender the superior (simpler) appearance of the lower level armor. For example, low lever mage gear does not have fugly/silly hip or shoulder flappers. But higher level gear (ugh) does. So the reward for moving to higher level light armor for me was also having to move into costumes and/or severely limit style/motif choices.

Frankly, I'd rather see the removal of hip flappers from light armor and the ability to hide various pieces (like those silly shoulder wings) just like I can with hoods/helms. Oh, and the ability to change an ugly motif into a better looking motif would be lovely as well.

As far as the thread's basic question, it doesn't bother me much. I don't fret gear much until CP160.

I think at this point, gear level is irrelevant.

gear is "CP 160" but the CP cap is going up to 630 next patch. its making the gear look outdated. just remove it.

The point of it is once you reach level 50, the focus shifts to vertical character progression, it doesn't make sense that at that point you can't get the best base gear for your character. I'm not saying make it easy after that point, I'm saying implement a more in depth crafting for upgrading your gear to be stronger, not more rng to find a higher cp level of gear every 10 levels till 160 cp... It's also irrelevant after you reach 160cp on your account, and then when you hit level 50 on your character, mobs are your accounts cp level and your gear is stuck at 50. That seems more like an oversight on the developers part if you ask me, and this would fix that, plus no more rng because no more cp level cap increases to gear...

If One Tamriel is any indication, it's quite likely that they'll never up the gear cap ever again. If it's not happening with the first iteration of this new big "Chapter" system (Morrowind), when would it ever happen?

They really can't do this, OP. Unless they intend to shell out millions and millions of gold to all the people who used tons of mats to craft cp160 gear.

I mean i guess they technically can, as it's their game, but not without a s***storm of epic proportions.

only for your gear to be rendered obsolete by an increase in gear cp level cap... But let's not forget how that also segregates new players from veteran players in end game content, like trials...

There will probably never be a Gear Cap Increase. It serves no purpose for the game, and since the entire world is scaled, there is no reason to to ever move the gear cap. Plus as you say, it arbitrarily segregates the player base, which ZOS has stated they don't want to to.

The only time it's an issue is the very first time you level from CP10 to CP160

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

They will probably leave it as is, and just make gear deteriorate to the point of being unusable/unwearable. Unless patch repaired with another similar item, to keep gear from being permanent.

Usually I think just leave it as it is but then I wondered why. I don't think it serves a purpose except keep you changing it out every few levels.

I also wonder why to specific class skill lines have a level 42 skill. Shouldn't they all be available to pick and choose as you gain points? Is there a purpose for both of these other than an old holdover for when we were subjugated by levels. How on earth is PvP supposed to be balance when a level 10 can't assess his level 42 skill. Not once in the letter welcoming me to Cyrodiil did I see the reminder that I will be wrecked by CP160 characters now go have fun.

If there's a valid reason why gear shouldn't grow with character then I'd accept it but presently it just seems something of a by gone era.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with your suggestion but I am having a hard time following why. What I've bolded hasn't happened a single time in the removed VR era of the game. They've stated they have no current plans to do so, as well as have stated IF they ever do it'd come with consideration and a meaningful way to handle the gear issue.

While I do think the gear cap at 160 and the player cap at anything different is a little strange, your reasoning for the change is based on something that there's no indication we need to be concerned with it.
