This is pretty standard in elder scroll games like oblivion and skyrim
Note that its not illegal to look in containers just stealing from them so having auto loot stolen goods is nice to have off.
If you steal for the money you don't want to pick up lockpicks, water and style stones anyway.

One of my very "upstanding" characters (she is nice, but a little too socially aware) accidentally stole something in StormHaven, and hid under a bridge for hours rather than face the shame of it.
