I hit level 10 in thieves guild without doing any of the story somehow. Like literally don't ask me how, I don't know. Does just stealing stuff level it? I almost never went to Hew's Bane.

I murder tons of people though and I'm struggling to push level 4 Dark Brotherhood. I spent a ton of time in Gold Coast doing dailies and contracts.

When I first did DB and TGs back on console I remember it being similar, TG going faster despite the fact I put more effort into DB.

Pickpocketing and stealing from safeboxes level TG as I recall.

Not chests - the safeboxes that are metal. You usually find them in homes and shops. Not the chests you find in the open world.

Also finding the thieves treasure troves in the open world levels TG I believe.

Trust me, I know the difference between TG and Legerdemain. I spent time grinding the latter. I spend a lot of time stealing, I just didn't do like, any TG content and still leveled it.

Equal time sink. Same mechanisms of repeatable quests available though passives in TG help reduce any bounty faster but DB repeatable quests are easier to do without getting a bounty as long as one is careful.

I think you are thinking of Legerdemain which are leveled by picking locks and stealing. For TG to even remotely be leveled by these actions requires a repeatable quests and it is the quest that levels TG, not the pickpocketing or safeboxes themselves.

The way I did both is this:

    1. I would do the story quests for a chunk of skill line xp until you can't progress any more.
    2. I would do the daily quest
    3. I would grind out the repeatables until I level and can progress the story line
    4. rinse and repeat.

That gets you to about level 8-9 in each. The rest is just grind it out.

In answer to the Original question - they are about the same in terms of time requires.

As noted above, the main quests for the story grant a skill point for both areas. That is a skill point per main quest, but not every quest you will do along the way. Really the main reason for doing them on multiple characters.

Dark Brotherhood takes longer; Thieves I managed to level just by doing the story with the occasional daily or tip board. In DB the only daily that counts towards progression is the Black Sacraments so i was having to take loads of contracts to get to each new level

I found TG to be faster, between TG having more story quests (might be mistaken there) and that Kari's hit list, I didn't really get fed up with grinding it or do many repeatables. DB on the other hand, I do recall getting fed up and doing many, many repeatables.

Are any of the DB passives cool in practice? I really like Clemency from the TG, and Swiftly Forgotten is nice as well. Nothing from the DB -- except maybe the Shadowy Supplier -- is jumping out at me as being similarly desirable?

I only invest in Shadowy Supplier and Shadow Rider (or whatever it's called, the one that reduces enemy aggro if you're mounted). Helps to speed past mobs easier if you're not in the mood for their crap.

I never finished the Thieves Guild quest chain. I stalled at the wedding quest. It drags on and on and on and on and progress isn't saved. If you bail out for any reason, you have to restart it from scratch. A prime example of how not to do story quests like this - they should be short so that everyone has time to do them.
lunawisp was my Peacebringer in City of Heroes - a game sadly consigned to history. She lives on in memory as my gaming id.

TG significantly faster, in large part because as you level up - you get TG story missions unlocked which by themselves contribute a large portion of the leveling process.

DB has story missions too, and they also contribute - but not as much and not as many.

In short, to level TG to max, you will have to do some, but not a lot, of the repeatables (the dailies and infinite per day repeatable). For DB, you need to do lot more contract repeatables just to get to next rank level in order to unlock a new story mission.

I started both at same time right after coming back to game with Homestead, and all DLCs were new to me. TG was far faster and easier. But I'd recommend DB start first, get blade of woe, then do TG. BoW makes TG I find lot easier.

DB can be levelled as quickly as TG, but requires far more effort as fewer things progress the skill line. It's a real pain, actually, as you'll have way more loading screens, running back and forth to Mother's. Essentially, only the dailies, the main quest, and the kill quests progress the skill line.

TG is pretty straightforward as loads of things progress the skill line.
