Need help with optimization

Hi all,

I just got this game (and enjoying it very much). I am having some issues with frame rates, and wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I will do my best to keep it short. Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Issue: Getting 60-100 FPS most of the time, but will dip into the 20's and 30's randomly for a few seconds (but doesn't stutter or freeze, sound still okay). Not associated with town/heavy pop, busy screen, outdoor vs. indoor. It happens maybe 10-20% of a 2 hour stretch play time.

Hardware:
CPU: Intel I7 6800K overclocked to 4.1Ghz and 1.2V (stable for 6 months, heavily tested temps, etc)
CPU cooler: Corsair hydro H115
Power: 1200W EVGA SuperNOVA platinum
Video Cards: MSI GTX 1080 Hybrid SeaHawk x 2 SLI
RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB (4x8GB)
Hard Drive Samsung 850 Evo 2.5" 1TB

I've checked my GPU and CPU usage, they are both well under 75% during these periods, temps are cool

I went to NVIDIA profile - made sure max performance, tried both SLI profiles (1 and 2) after reading some threads in this forum to split the video card work

I turned on/off VSYNC in-game and in my NVIDIA profile as well as tried adaptive, (I am using a gsync monitor) with no difference.

I tested at 1080p, UHD (3440x1440), and 4K - resolutions: does not alter the frequency or severity of the issue.

I went to the ini settings and turned high resolution shadows to 0, and the texture settings between -3 to 3 with no difference

The only other issue I haven't messed around with yet is hyperthread...I read this game relies heavily on CPU...but with the temps and usage I am seeing, I don't see it bottlenecking from what I am able to monitor.

If anyone has any suggestions or have come across similar issues and found fixes, I would greatly appreciate it.

In my opinion, no matter how good your hardware is, the issues will be still there. This game is just bad in terms of optimization. And to put some contrast to your results, I have i3-4170k + GTX 750 TI, graphic settings almost maxed out, and I get very similar framerate. And FPS drops occurs, like for many other people with much better HW.

After all kind of tweaks you have already tried, try to increase ESO.exe process priority in task manager.

It's a shame that this is the case, but you're right - it's poorly optimized. Thank you for the suggestion on the task manager priority - unfortunately no luck.

However, I did something that improved the problem - I set my screen refresh rate 1 above my gsync (so 61) and I almost eliminated the problem. I forgot which forum I came across to find this "fix", but it seems to have done the trick. VSYNC is on in-game, but i made NVIDIA override the in-game settings and set the PG348Q monitor to force 61 FPS.

It's one of those situations where it's above my head, but I'm glad it worked and my computer didn't go up in a ball of flames... yet.

    try disabling sli..
i used to run sli and encountered many random issues like yours..
i removed the second card and never put it bk in since.

try googling sli and eso, theirs countless posts of people stating that it doesnt seem to work as it should, (yes theirs allot of old posts, but unless nvidia has updated the sli profile, issues will remain)

Thank you, I'll look into this. I'd hate to physically replace the card everytime I want to switch games, but I'll see what I come across.

Some ADDons can provide this type of FPS drops or micro freezes. One of them is minimap addon. It works bad with skyshards / lorebooks addons.

if you up your lua memory limit to 256 or 512 the minimap stutters from the standalone minimap go away, as do lua out of memory errors.

at the moment, as of the last 1-2 patches, the games perfs gone to crap for myself and 3 friends, all have seen a similar drop in perf in the open world, and also seen black textures/water turn black..

standing still fps are as normal, panning slowly is a 10-20fps drop, moving and turning 30+fps drop...

this was not true previously... i rarely saw below 60fps outside busy areas with lots of people.... like cities, those always suck fps wise...

anyway....this is the ONLY game showing these effects for me, tested a half dozen others today and they all are running great, better then i remember in some cases....

hope they figure out what changed

also, looks like there are alot of bad routs to the eso servers, packet loss and wildly inconsistant pings when running tracerout and ping tests.....wtf ZOS....guess its time to cancle my + sub... till they fix this...(yes have run repair, even re-downloaded the whole game...hoping that would fix it....:/
