During the weekend, I made a new character with some more difficult rules:
1. Play a race and class I wouldn't normally use. In my case, Argonian Templar.
2. No equipment crafting or buying from merchants or guild traders, just use the gear that drops, and sell anything else. Consumable crafting seems OK, I'm too lazy to stay stocked up in stolen bread and alchemy bottles, and consumable writs are fast money.
3. No sponging off my rich existing chars: Can't keep money or items in the bank. I do let myself drop off recipes and motifs I don't need, but can't take anything out.
4. Play thru the content legit, no grinding and jumping around like I have since my main finished.
I've tried challenge mode before by making an EU server char, but the ping was murder and switching between servers is annoying.
Thanks to double XP, got her to level 20, geared in shalk and partial training sets (Stonefalls, and it's good enough). Wanting to get rid of a painting that dropped, I did the starter housing quest (no sponging, so can't just use existing houses) which requires running across all of Shadowfen, my one non-linear quest so far.
Lessons learned so far:
1. Argonian swimming is amazing. Water's now the fastest way to get somewhere, instead of a terrible obstacle. I still don't like luggage, but that and the stat recovery's pretty sweet.
2. The cash from mobs (I remember when everything dropped 1 GP, 2 GP if you were lucky) and selling gear instead of deconning (and stealing, but I knew that) adds up fast, I've got backpack 100 already.
3. Templars seem to be pretty soloable DPS with just a few skills, not having to rely on weapons much yet. Learning how to heal or tank, which I don't normally do, will be the harder part.
