Can't connect to launcher.bethesda.net

Howdy folks! Has anyone run into this before? I've been getting the "Login Timeout" message consistently since 4/3/17. None of the solutions given in the support page (or the forums) worked. I restarted, forwarded game ports, checked updates, reset the ProgramData folder, run as admin, don't run as admin, etc. I've also reinstalled the game, changed my password, flushed my DNS, cleared my ARP, and replaced my router. After a little digging I found this in the Game Consultant report:

"Pinging launcher.bethesda.net [198.20.198.100] with 32 bytes of data:

What's going on here? Is ZOS blocking me? What the fudge ZOS? I thought we were friends?!

P.S. Before someone asks, yes I have submitted a ticket.

Could be any number of things, but it's probably related to your internet connection. Either that or your firewall is blocking it.

Thanks for the reply! It's being allowed thru the firewall. That's one of the first things I checked actually. I even ran it with the firewall disabled (dangerous I know). ...nothing.

Do you have specific suspicions regarding the internet connection? I haven't changed anything about my service, or my modem in years. And, I'd been playing the game for 4 months, no problem.

Also, this might help: An nslookup calls it a "non-existent domain"

If you receive an error stating "Login Error: Login Timeout" when trying to log into The Elder Scrolls Online, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:
    •Check Service Alerts
•Power cycle your console and network
•Add ESO as an antivirus exception
    •Forward the game ports
    •Check for updates
    •Give Mac access
    •Reset ProgramData folder

    Check Service Alerts

Verify the servers are not undergoing scheduled maintenance here.

If playing on console, you should also check the service alerts for your platform:
    •Xbox Live Status
    •PlayStation Network Service Status

If the ESO server or platform is undergoing maintenance or experiencing an outage, you will not be able to connect until it is resolved.

Power cycle and then test your network

If playing on console, you can reset your machine's IP by performing a hard reset. To do so, hold down the power button on the console itself and allow it to completely shut down. Once complete, turn off your modem or router as well and wait 10 minutes before turning all of your devices back on.

If playing on PC/Mac, you should also try turning off your modem or router for 10 minutes before rebooting.

When everything is back online, you should test the console's network connection:
•Instructions for the Xbox One players can be found here.
•Instructions for the PlayStation 4 can be found here.

Add ESO as an exception to your antivirus software

Each antivirus program is different, and we recommend you view your antivirus developer's website for full instructions on how to add exceptions.

The application files that may require exceptions are:
    •ESO_launcher: C:\Program Files (x86)\ZenimaxOnline\Launcher
    •ESO.exe: C:\Program Files (x86)\ZenimaxOnline\The Elder Scrolls Online\game\client\eso.exe (by default)

Some antivirus programs require entire folders to be selected instead of a single file. When this is the case, the file paths below are what players should use. If required by the antivirus program, include all subfolders since every file is critical to run the game.
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online\

    Forward the game ports

To best access The Elder Scrolls Online you should configure you routers to open the following outbound ports:

    All Platforms

    •TCP / UDP Ports 24100 through 24131
    •TCP / UDP Ports 24500 through 24507
    •TCP / UDP Ports 24300 through 24331
    •TCP Port 80
    •TCP Port 433

In addition to the above, some more-specific ports are required for consoles.

    Xbox One Ports
    •UDP Port 88
    •UDP Port 5060
    •UDP Port 5062
    •UDP Port 6250
    •UDP Port 3478 through 3479
    •UDP Ports 12000 through 32000
    •UDP and TCP Port 53
    •UDP and TCP Port 3074
    •TCP Port 80
    •TCP Port 433

    PlayStation 4 Ports
    •TCP Ports 10040 through 10060
    •UDP Ports 50000 through 60000
    •UDP Ports 12000 through 32000
    •UDP Port 6250
    •UDP Port 5060
    •UDP Port 5062
    •UDP Port 3478 through 3479
    •TCP Port 80
    •TCP Port 433

    Check for updates

If on PC/Mac, you should also ensure that the ESO Launcher has downloaded and installed all available updates before logging back in. If on console, we also recommend completely closing out the game and allowing the system to check for game updates before restarting the game itself.

Give ESO and Steam access to Mac

If playing ESO on Mac, you should ensure that both Steam and ESO have access to your machine by navigating to the Security & Privacy menu, selecting Privacy, then clicking on Accessibility and adding them to the list.

    Reset the ProgramData folder

If playing on PC, you can also try resetting the ProgramData folder:
1.Close both ESO and the ESO Launcher.
    2.Open the game's installation directory.
    3.Open the folder named Launcher.
4.Inside the "Launcher" folder, there is a folder named "ProgramData".
5.Rename the "ProgramData" folder to "ProgramDataBackup".
6.Open the launcher and download update.
    7.Click Play.

Thanks for the reply PeterT! But, I'll reiterate what I said in my first post: I've tried all of the canned solutions. None of them work!

That's why I've provided the game consultant and cmd prompt info that I have. I have a hard time believing this is something on "my end." My computer is running smoothly, and I have zero connectivity problems other than this. I can surf the net, play other online steam games, etc. And nothing has changed about my internet service. I just can't connect to 198.20.198.100!

Somebody? Anybody??? I'm getting pretty desperate here.
  • Anbringehr
yeah, i seem to be having the same issue here.

    let me ask you something

are you by chance using comcast?

Looking at your post, I use the same launcher.

However, mine is listed as follows: Besthesda.launcher_net

Note the name difference and underscore between launcher and net.

Don't know if that's the issue, just thought I'd throw it out there.

    Good luck.

Having precisely the same problem (total packet loss to launcher), which arose after last maintenance and a few days of getting weird lag spikes in-game. Beyond the lag that goes with my distance to servers, I've not had any connection issues previously I was not able to solve on my own, and have used this connection for months. It's wired, has port triggering set up, gets power cycled prior to use, has no other devices using it, and I've tried swapping out cables. Also tried all the stuff listed in the help article.

Have you had any luck with a fix?

My internet otherwise is performing normally, along with other games, services. I ran ping tests in groups of 50 to a half a dozen random sites, nearby and far away, to see if I'm having any other packet loss, but it's only to Bethesda.

Disregard my previous post, that's not the problem.

I played approximately 4 hours ago, and didn't have any problems.

I started playing again about 15 minutes ago, and couldn't connect through Steam, it kept telling me "Login timed-out."

Basically, I have the exact same problem now that you have.

I ran the utility to check the files, and when it was done, it told me 514 files are missing.

I looked immediately at every folder (you have to, some files/exes are in strange folders), and the folder that held my launcher is completely gone (and the files in it). I lost the launcher that I discussed in my previous note.

All the launchers are gone, as a matter of fact.

I'm going to run the repair utility (I started but stopped when it told me it was a 2 1/2 day download, hopefully it will only install the missing files, not the entire game which is 59 GB - my download speed is, on average, 1 GB per hour sigh)

Did any of you have any issues that required help to restore something?

I'm in a strange situation. I'm a previous player who left the game back in 2015, and came back last month. I reinstalled the game from Steam (where I had purchased it previously). Anyway, long story short, Support came through with excellent work and was able to restore my old account.

The weird thing is, it's not under Steam. So, I was going in under Steam, playing new characters. Then, I had to find a launcher after my old account was restored. I found Bethesda.launcher_net deep in one of the Steam folders, and that launched my old account. So, for about a month, I was playing in two different places.

I played about 4 1/2 - 5 hours ago, and everything was working fine, then, after lunch, I started to run into problems, and detected the 514 missing folders.

The folder with the launcher doesn't exist anymore, and I also couldn't find the launcher that the OP was using, so I think they're all gone.

I'll return here and let you know what the repair utility did (I hope it's not reinstalling the entire game. When I came back last month it took almost 3 days to install it sigh).

Have you looked to see if the folder is still there?

    C:
    Program Files (x86)
    Steam
    Steamapps
    Common
    Zenimax Online
    Launcher (folder)
    ... launcher name

    Or ran the repair utility?

I'd like to know your results because that's different, but the same result in the end, it seems.

    Good luck.

NOTE: The repair utility is downloading the entire 59 GB instead of pulling out the 514 files it needs.

I attempted to take a screenshot with error data but it was blocked by a black screen on copy and also didn't send the capture to the designated folder. Smells fishy.
