Unless you are tanking dungeons, MDK thrives on destro staves.

1H/Shield is not a damage dealing weapon. It's abilites/passives are all centered around mitigating damage and tanking. There are high damage PVP builds that fight with a 1H/Shield bar or two, but the purpose of the weapon itself is to block/mitigate.

If you want to do damage in PVE, Flame staff is your jam. :)

If you're new to the game play as a dps and switch to tanking when you are done leveling or it will take forever.

No I'm not that new to the game, I have two lvl 50's. Plus I'm getting carried through skyreach.

I don't have any specific tanking builds, no. Maybe others here can help you out with that. I do know a bit about tanking though:
    1. 5 pc Ebon or a crafted tanking set is a good place to start.
    2. You'll want spell and physical resist as high as you can get them, 30k+
    3. Start leveling 1h/Shield skill if not already maxed.
    4. Use a taunt (or 2). Puncture/Ransack from 1H/Shield or Inner fire from Undaunted.
    5. Block a lot. CC and group mobs for your squad.

I was running sword and shield on my Dragonmage actually just so I could come in close and lay down all my short ranged class abilities without dying.

I have switched to dual wield now though.. there is no way I'll be trying to farm City of ash forever to get a sharpend BSW inferno staff, I have a sharp mace that is enough.

Also I want to wear a monster set and a full two sets so I need to use single hand weapons. I have a fire staff on the back bar to lay down the burn from a distance.

Sorry dude thats the definition of new to the game in a nutshell. You've grinded 2 chars to level 50 you're not that experienced, especially with end game play.

For dps you'll need flame staff for abilities such as elemental blockade, and for light attack weaving dots etc.

Sword and board is mainly tanking unless you're playing pvp then sword and board is almost a go to for MagDK's.

I would strongly recommend leveling up as a damage dealer. It's much faster, and you need those skills anyway. Even as a dedicated tank, you need a damage dealer gear setup for many dungeon bosses that can't be taunted, or have similar mechanics where a tank is a liability.

Alcast includes an all-crafted version with his magDK pve dps build. If you don't know a 9 trait crafter, go with Seducer instead of TBS, and whatever decent jewelry you pick up pre-CP160.

If you must grind up characters, you still need to spend some time in public dungeons, world bosses, etc., learning your skills and rotations. If you have to be carried through Skyreach, you don't know how to play your class yet.
