I do understand this is to shorten loading screen - but i personally highly disslike it as it is for me much more immersion breaking than a longer loading screen...and in the case of missing npc it results in the same wait time anyway...is there anyway to reduce this happening, even at the cost of other things?

the problem is also - it not only happens when logging in but also recently started happening just in general in the world when riding around, people at a distance start at "being black" and the textures popp in with delay when im close

yep i get it often...especially when warping into busy towns like deshan...also get type box not working and have to log out and back in again to get it working.
    Lag must be the culprit

On pc you can turn these player silhouettes off. Go into the elder scrolls folder located in my documents, open up player settings in notepad and look for the line that says player stand ins enabled. Change the 1 next to it to 0 to disable them and save the file.

this will lead to not seing shadows and then the players just popp in when they are "fully" loaded?

What about npc that appear with a delay?

I recently altered a lot of user setting and nvidia options to improve performance - could any of the altered options cause more of these texture delays?

This is simply server lag and/or internet latency delaying the client loading PC gear info, NPC locations, etc. The black silhouettes are the client showing a PC it knows about but for which it hasn't yet been told the gear to render.

the problem is especially with dolmen - until enemies appear to me, the dolmen is 90% done already... this problem appeared recently wasn't the issue before...

They added the black silhouettes so that you would know someone is there. Sort of important in places like Cyrodiil.

Big picture. What happens is that the server quickly tells your computer/console that someone is there, but fills in the detail later. When the server is not really busy, when the connection you have to the game through the internet has no delays or losses, when you computer or console can keep up with the demand to load all the player and NPC textures, and basically when everything is working perfectly, this all happens very quickly.

When things are less than perfect, for any reason, or even a couple of reasons all working together, we see what you describe. The game draws the black silhouette as a place holder for players and, when it can, it comes back and adds the details.

For NPCs, it simply draws nothing. They are still there, and you can collide with them.

This always happens to me as well. Just use an AOE and start spamming it. You'll see damage numbers going up, but nothing there. Just do that until the mobs start showing up.

to me its just weird that it started happening like 2 days ago, before ive never encountered that...ist it simply because more people are playing due to easter so its directly correlaed to the amount of people? shouldn't it be more a matter of my internet connection (which is stable through cable, no wireless)

I've had this happening for *weeks* now.

    It's yucky.

It is really anoying when NPCs I need to talk to doesn't load but I must admit that it is pretty funny to see a black untextured body with no textures except for my character's face whenever I use a wayshrine.

But the worse part is when invisible guards attack/catch you...

That load is also easier on the server and communication with each inlogging client. You immersion is irrelevant to performance. Want to reduce it? Faster net and more powerful hardware.

This was just another thing done for the PvPers in a way that messed up things up for PvEers. Why they couldn't just apply it to the PvP zones I do not know.

I agree that it has become a lot more noticeable in the last few weeks, indicative of increased numbers of players running around - possibly as a result of the two consecutive festivals.

Its just weird that this started happening all of a sudden; neither my internet connection nor the hardware change....any settings or ini tweaks that can improve this?

it seems to me that the population of Tamreil as a whole is doubled if not tripled over the last year so that could have a huge impact on this as well. That being said I am playing with a new Alienware 17.4 with a Titan Geforce GFX 10 card and a amplifier box adding two more GFX 10's to the mix. I play at Ultra settings now and have not seen a black figure or missing walls or any issues since upgrading systems.

Okay look, we all know you hate PvP, but this feature was not done for PvP at all. I NEVER see black silhouettes in PvP, only ever when loading into PvE zones.
