PS4 Pro question regarding 4k mode vs 1080p enhanced.

Im just curious if there is anyone here that can provide ACTUAL first hand insight regarding 4k mode and 1080p enhanced mode on the PS4 pro.

Im trying to figure out if the features present on 1080p enhanced mode (water reflections ,AO, shadows etc) are at the same level when running the game in 4k mode on an HDR television. There has been a lot of back and forth on the topic with assumptions and hearsay. Rendering at native 4k is more taxing of course, so many have assumed or claimed the native 4k mode with HDR actually disables some of these graphical enhancements to manage 30fps at native 4K. Can anyone confirm this is in fact the case?

I am of the firm belief that HDR and 4k loses a lot of steam / appeal when the graphical bells and whistles are suppressed in a game just to reach a stable frame rate.

There's not much difference. It's there, but not much.

The $k mode in teh PS4 Pro is an upscaled 4k, not native 4k.

eso runs 4k native on ps4 pro. But this is irrelevant to the question in all honesty.

Minus 4k and HDR, are the graphic sliders the same for eso on ps4 pro under either display modes? is what im getting at.

When you say there isnt much difference, im not sure what you are referring to. Are you saying that the 4k mode is less or more on the visual perks compared to 1080p enhanced?

Again if there is anyone with an actual firm grasp on the topic that has done a comparison, id love to know.

Yes. I have a regular PS4, and a PS4Pro. Both hooked up to a Samsung 4K HDR TV. Both PS4s output HDR just fine. The Pro, however, gives you an ESO menu choice - 4K, or 1080 Enhanced.

In 4K, the enhancements are not present. It's comparable to the regular PS4, except much sharper of course. With 1080 Enhanced, you get the water reflections and shadows but it's all rendered in 1080p. So it's one or the other, either increased clarity/definition with 4K, OR graphical enhancements with 1080 Enhanced.

Since I sit about 9 feet from my TV when playing, the advantages of native 4K at that distance are negligible. The graphical enhancements, on the other hand, transform the game. So I run 1080 Enhanced on the Pro. Hope this helps.

It does. Thank you. I apologize if this is redundant but, when you set the game to 1080p mode in the eso menu, does it downsample the 4k imagine? or are you at the mercy of your 4K tv in how IT handles a 1080p source?

In "1080 Enhanced" you get a much prettier game IMHO, but of course it's sending 1080p to the TV and not 4K.

What happens at that point is up to the TV. I suppose some will attempt an upscale, with a possible small latency cost.

Bottom line is your initial assumptions are correct. On a PS4Pro set to 4K in ESO, the game looks exactly the same as it would on a regular PS4, except with that 4K clarity/definition. Or, you can choose a "Standard HD" version (1080 Enhanced) with significantly improved graphical shading, etc.

I've actually sat and toggled that option back and at my viewing distance, I love the 1080 Enhanced. I don't see a frame rate issue with either selection though. So basically, ZOS is using that extra PS4Pro horsepower to either deliver higher definition, or deeper graphical features. You can't do both (probably because the PS4Pro would melt...lol)

    For sure, thanks!
