I almost never buy from zone chat but I've bought some of the last remaining motif pages in some collections because I was either not finding them on guild stores, or they were priced at 2x the MM average. In any case I only ended up paying about 20% more than MM average, but I saved time. It was only something like 2-5K extra per page for really expensive ones like Trinimac and Ancient Orc. I'm usually very stingy when spending money, even if it's game money.

Offer a lower price, show my MM data if I have some to show current trends.

If I can't get it for a price I want I thank them but decline the purchase and move on.

The poll results seems nice, but in game in reality, I get half replies that are either sarcastic or hate.
    Funny.
Btw, I always sells way lower than anywhere they can find in guild traders, and on guild traders I always sells lower than the lowest available there, as I prefer fast 1 day turnarounds.

The only times I'm really interested in items in the chat box is in trials/dungeons. In both I give what I don't need away for free, and I expect the same in return. I'm still on the credit side - I've gotten more than I've given. As my own sets start to fill up that balance will swing, and I'll give out more than I get. That's fine with me.

If someone posts an item I want I'll ask if I can have it. If they reply with a price I'll just reply something like: "In that case I'll skip, thanks. I give what I get for free." So basically I'll just tell them why I won't buy it. There's no need to be insulting or rude about it, I'm just not willing to buy in dungeons/trials.

I've lately started seeing people stating that they're looking for e.g. "TFS rings" in group chat. In that case I'll reply and state that they can have any that I find for free. I'm hoping that it will sway one or two people in the group to be a bit more charitable. We're all fighting RNG in trials/dungeons. We might as well make it a team effort.

"Teach them the real market price". Laughable.

The price is how much you are willing to sell it for and how much you are willing to buy it for. To hell with the "market price".

And equally comical, are the people who feel they must zone post MM prices as if their guild(s) set the standard across all Tamriel.

Have bought a couple items in zone chat, one was some gold mat someone was selling cheap as he needed gold.
Other was an furniture template I liked.
have asked for prices a couple times just for fun and hoping the seller did not know the real price.

Haggling is just part of business, we all expect it and it makes things fun. I've often just given the trader more-or-less the amount he was looking for just because he was civil and good to do business with.

Reply with "no, thanks", then if they ask if I would buy for a lower price then I tell them what I am willing to pay for it.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

Usually I'll just say no thanks. If their sell price is absolutely ridiculous, then I may offer a sarcastic comment. Some time ago, someone in zone was selling Dwemer Chests which I still needed at the time so I asked how much. He said 400,000 gold. I laughed a bit then asked for his real price assuming he was joking but he was serious. I believe the high price at the time was around 20k in most stores. He told me he sold them all the time for 400k so I offered to sell him as many as he wanted at 100k so he can make 300k each. He declined obviously, but why would he throw away a golden opportunity to make 300k on each sale!

I personally like the ones where they refuse to COD, want meet right now, and you're in the middle of a dungeon.

If it's that dire of a sale, knock yourself out.

I always rip into people that meme their "real market price" in zone chat, as if selling within 10% up or down from their AVERAGE figure calculated from up to 5 guilds worth of real data (or many guilds of un-sold data :^)) cannot be deviated from whatsoever.

My MM is quite accurate, since it collects data from 4 big trade guilds. 2 have traders in Rawl'ka, one in Elden Root and one in Belkarth. They sell about 30-50M/week. I've noticed that the prices are pretty close between items sold on any of the guilds (MM marks the transactions with colored dots, same as those you select for the respective guild chat). Sometimes I annoy would be scammers by posting the actual MM price right after their WTS in zone chat. They sometimes curse me in PM :D
