Did the loading screen just tell me GM's dont exist?

I find it funny everytime I see that save screen. "Real Game Masters" yet not a single soul have I encountered in my 3 years in the game with that Z beside their name.

I don't even know what a game master is. Is it a ZOS employee who has minor modding controls? Is it a top tier player who somehow got some power from ZOS? Do they even do the thing?

So many questions.

As a former GM, I can tell you they probably stay hidden for a reason. Whenever I'd show myself in game, I was trapped in what we call "Tell Hell". Our chat was nothing but tells from everyone. It's a challenge trying to help someone in game when your chat is scrolling 200 lines a second.

As for what we can do in game. Pretty much anything. Spawn/insta-kill mobs, create items, go invisible (duh), fly, teleport ANYWHERE. It was definitely a unique job and I had fun.

Well, kind of. I'll keep details vague, but there were certain bosses that had so many HPs that it took multiple /kill commands to actually kill the monster. Generally speaking though, no. Also, we can go invulnerable at will, so we can get agro and not worry about dying. If you ever watch any of the RIFT streams from the devs, you can see GM "powers" in action in some of them.

The GM's used to have mini 'events' that they would spontaneously start when showing up at various locations. In Davon's Watch two GM's showed up and started a horse race around the city. Another time they started a party in the Fish Stink tavern. Here's a screen I took with one of them at a different time.



That was a looong time ago though. Have no idea why they vanished for good.

Really there's not a whole lot of reason for them to 'physicslly' be logged into the game world. That loading screen message is more of a warning:
Don't be an idiot and give your information to someone claiming to be a GM.

I remember when the game had only been out a few months and I rolled my first alt I was whispered by a GM as soon I came out of the house after Coldharbour asking if I was human. That was when the bot problem was really bad.

The gods... Um Game Masters leaved us, there is nobody to pray to, were alone here, its a man time now!

The one time I've seen a GM (and they had the Z icon) was when I had a bugged achievement and they fixed it live for me.
That was first year of the game though I think, ever since supports just asked me to log out for an hour while they work on an issue.

I do wish me knew more about the ZOS security team and GM side.
