Is it safe to advertise your gamertag online?

I'm PC-NA but I used to play xbox so using term gamertag. Idk what computer peeps call it. Gamer_ID maybe? Anyway, you get the gist. How protected am I against harassment in game? If someone tried to spam my mailbox what could I do? I want to use forums or my website to give vampire bites, advertise my guild, and or trade furniture. But I have never felt safe giving my ID out. Am I being stupid paranoid?

Well anyone that looks at you in game can see your @name anyway. If someone is harassing you, you can just block them

It is best only share one's @name to those who you trust. There are tools to block people if they get out of hand. However, why do down that road if one does not have to? Also, the @name is one half of the user login info. If one is logging from new email address; one needs to confirm that it is you that is logging on. I prefer not have to deal with that if I do not have to. My two cents worth...

Better not join a guild, that is how you are listed in the Guild and Guild chat if you are worried about them seeing your @name

However as others have pointed out, it does not really need to be suppressed. Report the person for abuse if you need to, then put them on Ignore, they can never contact you again.

Unlike your game tag on a console, this does not follow you around to different games. Also, I think in options you can turn off the display of your account name and have it only be the character name, not sure I have not messed with it all that much.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

It's pretty easy for someone to find out your @ name on PC - all they need to do is look at you in-game, and there's multiple other ways to find out. Changing your settings won't work - that only changes what you see, not what other people see. Also, simply using zone chat, is enough for everyone in zone to find out your @ name if they want to. Joining a group will give access to your @ name. I wouldn't be surprised if there are other ways I don't know. Mails and whispers can be sent even if you only know someone's character name.

I wouldn't be worried though, as there's not many people who will harass someone, and even if they decide to do so, you can always ignore them, and/or report them.

This option only controls how you see other player's names. If you'd prefer to see their @name or their character name on the nameplate, chat, mail, etc. This does not control what name other people see when looking at you.

It's 2017. If someone wants to find out who you are they will.

    Thanks for advice.

I am not sure I'm as worried about in game players as forum trullz. People in the game are seriously playing not account abusers. Where I find the weirdoes are on forums (present company not included). There are people that join games for the sole purpose of trolling. On the forums. They don't play. Just prowl forums looking to irritate people as that is their kick in life. Tho they might login just to strike at someone. So my focus is not on people finding my user id from within the game (like guild mates) and harassing. It's more of a worry about someone with a forum account that plays at trolling not plays the game. My concern is posting my pc_id on the interweb and what a troll might be able to do with it that I cannot anticipate and counter.

Considering it is half of your login it's not safe, obviously, and we've been trying to explain that to ZOS since beta. They don't care.

Just make sure you don't use that handle for anything actually important.

-Edit- Maybe I misread your tone... It seriously seems you are insulting the majority of the forum base.

There isn't much anyone can do with your @ name, at least on PC(not sure for consoles). They would also need your password, the email address you signed up with and the password for your email address. Or they would need to be on the exact same computer and network you are using. So pretty much safe unless it's your real name or tied to you personally to where someone could track you down based on it. If that's the case you could always change it to something safer by using the Account tab up top.
