i don't know exactly how you'd implement it, perhaps by being unique quest or dungeon rewards, but this game really needs spell books. its a core part of elder scrolls.

I agree that it would be neat, but how are they a "core part" of TES? In Morrowind, there is only one spell book; all other spells are bought directly from vendors, no books involved. Spell books are only added in Oblivion via an official addon. They are only a core part of Skyrim, not the Elder Scrolls as a whole.

This is what they had planned for spellcrafting, but it has been "on the backburner but definitely still coming" since they announced it years ago. Though last year Matt Firor said if we ever actually get spellcrafting it won't be as originally unveiled.

An official addon is still official. And while Morrowind is easily my favourite of the single-player games, I do consider Oblivion and Skyrim official TES games.

I never said they weren't official games. That would be ludicrous. What I am saying is that spell books aren't a core part of TES. How can they be, when they only make a major appearance in one game? While Oblivion's addon is official, it isn't a core part of the game. If it was, it wouldn't be an addon.

Furthermore, as stated previously, Morrowind only has one spell book, and Daggerfall's singular "spellbook" was simply a name for your character's list of known spells (same effect as viewing your skills in ESO). Also, iirc, Arena lacked anything to do with spellbooks. Given this information, only two out of five main games had at least one real spellbook from the start, and one only obtains them in an addon (again, not part of the base game).

While I understand that spellbooks are important and cool, they are not a core part of the Elder Scrolls games.

I wish there were spellbooks as a offhand weapon (like a shield). It would have three types (like destruction staff or one/two handed weapons), they would be tome of alteration (defensive magic for magicka tanks, it would conjure a barrier in font of you when you block), tome of illusion (for cc and invisibility) and tome of conjuration (for summoning stuff or replacing your mainhand weapon with bound weapons that deals magic damage). Destruction and restoration are alredy tied to weapon type, with these we would have all of The Mage skill lines from Skyrim.
