Physical and spell dmg?

Ok so we have physical and spell resistance right. So my question is what do they do? like what is considered physical damage and what is spell damage? I've been thinking about this for a long time and I just can't figure it out. Part of me feels like it's super obvious and as your reading this your probably rolling your eyes or laughing very hard thinking " OH WHAT A FOOL, HOW CAN ONE NOT KNOW OF THIS". Well I'll have you know I'm no argonian slave. I happen to be a high elf, sir of the crown family.

The end was a bit unnecessary now that I think about it....

Abit unnecessary, yes. And for some reason I'm oddly offended by it.

    It's pretty straight forward.

If I punch you in the face, that's physical damage.

If I set your face on fire, that's spell damage.

physical, poison, disease damage are reduced by physical resistance.

magical, fire, frost, shock damage are reduced by spell resistance.

bleed, daedric damage cannot be resisted.

I think Thick Skinned can handle it. I may be wrong, but bleeding is DoT, and DoT can be resisted.

UESP wiki is a good resource for such questions.

To be fair such things aren't always accurate. And at various points in time the difference between magical and physical damage hasn't been straightforward or logical. If memory serves there was a time when staff damage scaled from physical damage and magicka.

Physical damage is generally anything that is from a melee weapon (or bow) and poison / disease damage.

Spell damage is everything magic like elemental damage and stuff you would look at and say, "Yeah that's magic."

There are a few inconsistencies, like Rakkhat in Maw of Lorkhaj having melee attacks that do magical damage.

I understand the confusiom, since ie damage from poison glyphs were still considered "magicka" damage a while ago. Not sure if it's still the same though.

Ah, no. Right now, there are:
    Physical Damage
    Poison Damage
    Disease Damage
    Magic Damage
    Frost Damage
    Flame Damage
    Shock Damage
Oblivion/Undead Damage (damage that go through wards and armor)

The tool tip now states exactly what kind of damage it is.
Weapon Damage and Max Stam increase the output of Physical Damage, Poison Damage and Disease Damage.
Spell Damage and Max Mag increase the output Magic Damage, Frost Damage, Flame Damage, and Shock Damage.

Generally, anything you need stamina for (or get stamina back when doing heavy attacks) is physical damage / applied to physical resistance. Anything you need magicka for (or get magicka back when doing heavy attacks) counts against spell resistance.
