The snow was less, but the cold just as sharp. He had wondered from the path some hours earlier, hopeful to catch something to fill his belly, he had. A small rabbit had crossed his path and was repaid an arrow for his trouble. He sat before the small fire, roasting the hare, rubbing it here and there with salt and spices. His store of bread was getting low, he would need to restock before he reached the border, or better yet after. It was still a border, and Nords were not always welcomed in High Rock these days. To much in his pack would make sneaking over troublesome. Better to restock once over the line.

He listened to the sounds of night creep over as he watched the fire dance about the pit. His meal settling into him as he finished the last bone, and the hard bread he had saved since Whiterun. The noise around him shifted suddenly.
He focused in on the change, the wind had slowed and the bushes rustled. His eyes locked, he moved ever so slowly to reach for his blade. The border with High Rock was near the Orc border too. The name of the Orcish homeland escaped him, but he did know bears were common there. The bears were so common on the border Solitude had taken the animal as their symbol.
Slowly he stood, he readied himself, glancing to the sky then back to weigh his options. Then it burst forth, a small fox, and he exhaled and lowered his sword. "Come to see the cook did you? Well if you are hungry, join me then little one." Kololf sat back down and tore one of the rabbit's hindquarters off. He was saving both hinds for his journey, but one hunter to another it was fitting. He tossed it to the fox and the little animal took no prodding as it went to work on the leg. Kololf sighed, that would have gotten him to the border towns, he would have to trap before crossing, or maybe fish. He went ahead and eat the other leg and watched the fox for a time. The animal almost seemed to not notice him sitting there. It played with the bones, leapt around the fire, pouncing on the shadows that flickered. The Nord sat and watched amused his little personal entertainer. Suddenly the fox froze and looked at him, as if it had just realized he was there. Kololf smiled and offered the bone in his hand to the fox, "Here, you can have the rest." The fox growled as it hunched down, its fur brisling. Kololf's smile melted as he tossed the bone to the fox. Even the meaty bone did not stop the aggression. Ignoring it the fox backed all the way to the bushes and vanished. Kololf spent the rest of the night watching the bush, hopeful the fox would return.
