Hello everyone,

I've been at it a week and I find I'm liking it. I thought I'd extend my experience to the forums as well.

Any advice for a new player, either sage or silly?

Welcome to ESO and its forum community!

Sage advice: Get your crafting going as fast as possible.

Silly advice: Don't be like me and forget to equip something in your off-hand (if not using two-handed weapons) until level 35.

    Hello, and welcome!

Best bit of advice I can give is to take yout time. Don't rush content, and enjoy the game for what it is. There is an awful lot to see and do, and my experience has been enriched by observing the detail and subtlety within the game. You'll find exploration in general a rewarding experience, and if you enjoyed the questing and NPC dialogue from the previous games, you should enjoy what ESO has to offer :)

Sage advice: The first time through, take your time. Don't worry about builds, or completion, or anything end-game related. Just explore and have fun doing whatever sounds fun. Want to go questing? Sure, no problem. Feel like stealing half a city's worth of stuff? Go ahead (though mind the guards). Want to spend an hour picking flowers? They've got that too! There are a lot of us longterm TES fans around (I fell in love with Morrowind and never looked back), so you've got company in your love for the experience for its own sake, nevermind what the more intense part of the MMO-oriented side of the playerbase says.

Silly advice: Don't listen to a certain khajiit when he says he's not immortal. He's a known liar, after all. ;)

Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

Welcome to ESO and the forums! :)
Some random advice: Find a nice guild that does things you would like to do. For example doing dungeons, trading, selling, general advice about the game, they could help you with all sorts, and you will likely make some great ingame friends! :)

You can reset your skills for gold so don't worry about "making a wrong choice" in terms of using skill points or morphs of skills.

Oh and playing with your family is awesome in ESO, I think it makes it infinitely more fun and interesting :)

Silly advice? Acquire 1 Billion [Meat] provisioning items, then ask zos if you can exchange it for an actual piece of meat.

Actual advice? Don't feel like you need to go out and buy new gear the moment you level out of your current gear. If you're <50, what you have on is probably good for 5-7 levels. (though i've personally leveled toons from 1-50 still wearing the first set of armor i ever put on them, though it does handicap you and make things more difficult)

Do what everyone said and take your time. Experiment with weird stuff and don't listen to people who say you can only do something one way. 99.9% of the content in this game can be done in any build you want. The other 0.1% can wait for 2 years.

Any advice for a new player, either sage or silly?

-For group content; ESO uses Tanks, Healers, and damage dealers. Read the skill line descriptions carefully (especially for the armor skill lines). They will tell you which types of equipment are the most effective for different play styles and group roles.

-Attacks that use Magicka as a resource will increase in damage based on the amount of Magicka you have.

-Attacks that use Stamina as a resource will increase in damage based on how much Stamina you have.

-Destruction and Restoration staves effectiveness scale with spell damage/magicka.

-All other weapons scale up with weapon damage/stamina.

-All NPCs in the game are level 50, champion point 160. Your character receives bonuses to its stats to make you capable of fighting those NPCs. As you level, the game reduces the bonuses to your stats and you will need to get better gear and spend skill points to make up for the difference (to stay strong like bull).

-You will earn Champion Points after you reach level 50. You will be able to use up to 600 CPs after level 50. CPs are account-wide, so you can use them with a fresh level 1 alt after you have earned them.

-Start researching weapon/armor traits as you find weapons/armor with traits on them (infused, charged, divines, training, prosperous, etc.). The research can be performed at crafting stations, is based on a timer that counts down even while logged out, and will be more valuable than selling the items in the long run.

-Deconstruct green, blue, purple, and yellow items you don't plan to use to start leveling your crafting skills (this can be done from level 1, no skill point investment needed). Deconstruct white items with the "intricate" trait, too.

-Sell all other white items you're not using. Farm crafting mats from the open world as you come across them - full stacks of refined materials sell to vendors for 800 gold, more so to players if you are in a guild with a guild trader.

-If you got a copy of the game that gives you a free horse, begin training it as soon as you can afford to spend 250 gold a day. Check your collections menu in your inventory to see if you have a horse already. If you don't have one, the cheapest is 10k gold from the vendor (Buy the cheapest, once it's trained it will be just as good as the 42k horses).

-Mounts are account wide - once you buy one, you will never have to buy another.

-Training applies to all mounts on a single character. Training a crappy 10k horse is good, especially if you decide to purchase others.

-The default for "Prevent Harming Innocents" is OFF. If you don't want to attack the non-enemy NPCs on accident, turn that option ON in the Gameplay menu.

-The game has a justice system: being caught stealing or attacking non-enemy NPCs will earn you a bounty and you will be arrested or attacked by the guards.

-You can pay off a bounty and sell stolen items to a Fence in the Outlaw's Refuge (trident shaped icon on your map).

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome and good advice. I read all the responses and handed out a lot of insightfuls. Too many to respond to individually. This was very helpful, as there was a lot I didn't know.

How do you pick a social guild? Most of what I've seen in zone chat makes me cringe. Is there a guild for people who remember this:

"How is your wife," asked Zalither.

"She's in bed with laryngitis," replied Harlyth.

"Is that Argonian *** back in town again?"

Yes, it's great. One of the first things my daughter showed me was how to duel. After beating me three times in a row, I asked her if this was payback for all the times I grounded her as a teenager.

For the record, I taught that girl to play Morrowind.

P.S. I didn't realize the forum had a "profanity" filter. What makes it amusing is it filters words from books written by Bethesda Softworks. :)

Guilds: You're sort of going to have to shop around. There is a subforum here for guild recruiting, which can help, but expect to leave (or ignore) a couple of guilds you try before you settle into a group you like. If you find yourself making a fair number of friends while bouncing around, try your hand at forming your own guild, or encourage one of your friends to if you think you won't like running it. ^^

Crafting: Trait research takes a long time and it only costs you the occasional item that you normally would have sold or deconstructed for materials. Try peaking in at the craft tables to check your research (top right tab that looks like a triangle with circles for points) and focus on equipment types you want to use. If you have a choice, on armors aim for Infused, Divines, and Training first. And in the same vein for weapons sharpened, precise and defending are good choices to aim for early on. This research will help you craft equipment at world tables that has sets to prop yourself up with some extra power, if you want to craft.

Zone chat/Dungeon Finder/other people in general: It's the internet, it's an MMO, there's a lot of people out there that range from dead silent and mechanical, to outwardly negative, to purposefully digging(trolling), to genuinely friendly or obnoxiously talkative. The one I neglected to mention is the legitimately angry person, because this person is a reaction to the other people, and I want to say that you will have the best time if you can avoid being angry with the plethora of other players around you. Online we all have a fantastic opportunity to make acquaintances and friend of all stripes from around the world, give them a chance at least. :p

Shopping: Since you're not one for MMOs I take it you won't be used to a global auction house like some people around here are, but that is not a thing here. If you want to buy things from other players you might have to trek across a zone searching vendors and asking other players if they have it for sale. This also means that your only options for selling things to other players are A) say it over and over in /zone chat or B) Join a trading guild that has a trader for you to list things on.

Combat: You unlock weapon swapping at level 15. I don't know where you are in that regard, but at this point you should consider a second kind of weapon to play with. As someone that only equipped restoration staves until like level 40 or whatever, I don't recommend sticking with only one the whole time. If you ask players for advice in building your character, you might get hit with all sorts of recommendations for it. Don't get all twisted up thinking you have to do what they say. ^^
If you quote someone, and intend for them to see what you have said, be sure to Mention them with @[insert name].

Hey! Saw someone pinged me, so here I am! If you're looking for beginner guides, I've got a wide array on my youtube. It's linked in my signature, along with a link to a forum post where all my guides are nicely organized (probably easier than trying to find playlist on youtube!)

Unlike yourself, this was my first ever TES game, but I have since start going backwards in time and trying previous ones! I must say I love both variations, single player and ESO (MMO). I hope you enjoy the MMO variation as much as I do!

As for some forum tips ->

Clicking the #10 or whatever number of a post will bring you direct to that post if you copy the URL and send it to someone. Can be handy for referencing things.

Whenever you do @SomeonesForumName like @OutLaw_Nynx did to me above, that person gets a notification. Quoting someone with an @name in the post, will ping that person once again. So if you don't feel they should be pinged, it's common courtesy to remove the @ symbol from the quote.

To edit your posts, hover over the post and you'll see a cog wheel (gear) icon show up in the top right corner that you can click and press edit.

Unless it's the first post/start of a thread....

Then you will find that cog wheel to the right of your thread title right at the top!

When you see the Z symbol beside threads, you can click it and it will bring you straight to the Zos post inside!

At said Zos post, you can hover over the.. err.. I believe post number (or Z symbol) and arrows will pop up. You can select the left or right arrows and it will shoot you over to the previous or next zos post within that thread (if they have another post in that thread of course)

https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/tracker is the link to the Dev Tracker. It's your best friend. Love it. All Zos posts (not counting mod "oh we removed some posts" posts) will appear in the dev tracker.

Said dev tracker is not available easily on the mobile site though, so you may want to visit it once on mobile and bookmark it for easy access!

PS - Start researching traits yesterday. And feed your mount train your riding skill at the stable, every day. Even if you don't own a mount yet!

Welcome! Enjoy the game and the forums!

    [EDIT]

don't mind the negativity you will find here.... it's just a game forum same as all the others...

as others have said.... crafting bag. if you are a player of elder scrolls game you will know - loot everything.

again as others have said level crafting but don't bother crafting weapons or clothing until you hit 50 minimum. you can go through the first part of the game quite happily on dropped gear. food and pots are another matter... work on those and use the ones you make, better than drops.

don't rush it. the pleasure is in the journey.

hmmmm, so big TES fan, not so enthusiastic about mmo's though - yep, same here...at least initially...

we are all very fortunate to have an excellent community of gamers whom will help not only with questions on the game - but, will also share their game experience...which is a great opportunity to learn and have fun...

just coming to the forums will help you tremendously when it comes to all the variables involving race, skills and gear...

my suggestion for someone not all that enthusiastic about mmo's - get out and away from the starter zones as quickly as possible...

try your hand at stealing and farming, doing both will pay dividends later...

go to cyrodiil as soon as you can (today if possible) - being able to kill other players will help to ease the pain of having to share your game with them :)

Of course everyone has different opinions, but while short on skill points, I'd prioritize provisioning over alchemy. Dropped pots will be good enough for levelling.

Enchanting though, for the love of goodness decon every glyph you find starting last week! It takes FOREVER to level. Like the equipment crafts, you can just decon stuff and level up the craft. No need to put skill points into it yet. Later on the line when you have some skill points to spare you can drop them into crafting, and if you have been deconstructing your crafts will already be half levelled up!
