Question about DoT effects

If a spell/skill says it does x damage then an additional x damage over 5 seconds, will casting it again before the 5 seconds are up reset the additional damage from the first use?
I'm wondering if the extra effects will stack or if they cancel each other out every time you cast the spell.

They cancel and reapply the effect.

You cancel the DoT part if you recast it. So, unless the main attack is way stronger than the ticks, or, its a CC skill that also has DoT, wait until it's done proccing.

Note, some CC's can only be applied one at time, so test the ones you use.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

It has to override the previous DoT otherwise your rotation would consist of you spamming your strongest DoT.

    True.
I forgot to ask in my original question, will it reset if I cast the same spell on a different enemy or will they both tick the extra damage?

If you recast a dot that has initial damage on a target that is still taking damage from your previous cast, you WILL get the initial damage again and it will start the dot timer over again. And to answer your second question, that depends on the ability. If it's a ground targeted ability, no you can only have one placed at a time. If it's a non ground targeted (like templar's Vampire's Bane) then yes, you will be able to apply the dot damage to multiple targets.
