Crates

I honestly really hope ZOS dont put too much effort into these crates. Im really disappointed in them adding this feature since other MMOs (*cough* swtor) are having problems with content and a focus on the in game store. I understand its just to get more funding but if you're going to add cool stuff at least let us buy it with crowns too or just release it without using crates, I would be MORE THAN GLADLY to spend real money on crowns or just re sub for those storm atronach mounts.

Agree. Crates are mostly for whales anyway. It's just another gambling scheme, and I won't take part. Consider that last year, China, one of the largest global markets for gaming, passed a law that forces games that run gambling boxes to disclose the odds of winning items and prizes. Why don't we have that? I'll tell you why: because if you saw the atrocious odds, you wouldn't buy the boxes. No thanks.

There's been a few player run efforts to record drops and therefore calculate the odds. Here's one started by Enodoc: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Zt5oj7PWNFFaTykgXhWQOOkVl1ekHAJgcJpueRN3C40/htmlview

So if players want to know what their chances are the information is out there. It may not be completely accurate but after about 700 crates it should be close, as in within 0.5% of the actual drop rate at least.

The ability to find out, or even knowing the odds, doesn't put some people off gambling. It doesn't even put people off thinking they're going to be the rare exception who gets really good drops early on (or getting upset when it doesn't happen).

I don't think they have eso in China. Also China has a very closed economy, so that isn't a really good comparison.

Even if they displayed the odds people will buy them. Have you ever seen a dead casino in vegas? Why does every store in every state sell lottery tickets and scratch offs? Because they sell. I'm no whale I bought a few because I could afford it, you choose not to buy, good for you, that's a perfectly acceptable stance. What I dont get is why everyone is so up in arms about them. Play the game, don't bother with the crates, tempted to buy, don't go in the crown store. There isn't one thing in those crates or in the store that makes a difference in how I play the game, and I certainly won't let it bother me to the point of having to complain about them everytime it comes up.

I don't have a problem with them. They are a gamble. However with free crowns from subscribing you don't have to gamble with additional money.

I've used my 1500 free crowns on them for 2 months now and I've got some really good stuff (not going to brag but I've been fortunate with RNG).

I would still subscribe without these crowns but I would not buy crates. The craft bag alone is worth the subscription.

Because it has the potential (as shown by other games) to affect the future development of the game. If they make more money from crown crates than DLC I can absolutely guarantee there will be people at ZOS who will see that as a clear sign that they should be developing more crates and less DLC, and there's a good chance those people will be the ones in control of where the budget for future development goes. And then if crate sales start to drop off they'll look for ways to make them more enticing - put more desirable items into the crates instead of into the game itself or the crown store, find ways to make it really inconvenient to play without buying crates like they do with the subscription and the crafting bag.

Maybe they'll surprise me and prove me wrong, but it's a pretty standard practice in the MMO industry.

Right. Your $$$ is more than just revenue. It is a vote of support. If someone's support is going towards development of gambling boxes, and they are ok with that, then more power to them. I for one don't want to see my support going to developing gambling boxes that I neither support nor partake of. The day that Zenimax decides to make the game gamble box focused or gamble-to-play is the day I heartbrokenly find myself another game. I really, really hope that day never comes.

I think they need to start linking the gambling addiction hotline/website. Like they have on lotto websites:

It has been like Swtor CM since the start, it's already starting to go downhill, to much effort in thinking with the wallet than the community.
