Sadly it isn't like in Oblivion where when you find Nirnroot for the first time you get a quest saying to visit an alchemist and give him this rare plant). Apparently people knew more about nirnroot in the 2nd era than they did in the 3rd era. What?

Right now, they are the most valuable reagent there is because everyone is doing writs, and alchmey writs typically require three of them. On PC, the price basically trippled over night after homestead dropped. On PC they go quickly at 250-275, and a little slower at 300. Much more than that and most of the listings are stale. Xbox is generally higher pricing than PC from what I understand.

It's because everyone in the 2nd era is farming them for writs. We're in the process of making Nirnroot an endangered species, which will lead to a Nirn-wide shortage of such that it will virtually vanish from Tamriel, and by the time of Oblivion it has only just started to spread across the continent once more.

Blame Homestead for Nirnroot being virtually unknown by the 3rd era.
