Questions on housing

Good day all.
I'm a (maybe) returning player, and I have a questions about the new housing system.
It's mostly directed at ex LotRO players: does the system works in a similar way to LotRO's one? Is there a neighborhood like that? How much customization on houses do we have? Is it restricted to "paying" players?
Basically: how does this system works? The article about it isn't very clear.
Thank you.

There's 39 instanced houses all over the world, no neighbourhoods.

You can decorate your house how you please, and can choose among couple of thousand furnishing, decorations, garden and block items. Housing editor is mostly very flexible, only feature one might miss is scaling.

You can buy unfurnished house with in-game gold, and it will be yours for ever. Can't sell it if you get bored with it. And furniture you can craft or buy achievement furnishing, which is fun but very time comsuming/expensive.

Not a LotRO player, but for gold, you can buy a house unfurnished. With crowns you can buy a furnished house or an unfurnished house.

ESO+ members get more slots to put things in the home.

No, they're not in neighborhoods, but some are in excellent locations, near towns. Like the small house right outside of Elden Root. Close to wayshrine, close to outlaw refuge, close to town.

You'll get a small room for free you can decorate, but small is an understatement. The one in Vulkan Guard is no bigger than a jail cell. Where the one in Ebonheart and Daggerfall are a little bigger.

Small ones are under 100k gold and the most expensive is around 3.8 million gold

Can't sell it? What if you want a different house when you can afford a bigger one? Can you own two? CAN YOU OWN THEM ALL? :D

The housing system is really good. Nothing like lotro at all. No neighborhoods. The medium size houses are really nice and most have decent size yards. Buying, finding and crafting furniture is a lot of fun. The crown store is just for people who want to say they have a house without actually doing anything to get it. Finding plans and crafting buying and trading furniture is what really makes it feel like your home.

Khajiit can confirm that you can own them all walker... if you have enough gold.

If you can afford it, you can buy them all.

On PC, I bought a house outside Marbruk, Greenshade. If you go to the Thief Mundus, you pass right by it. If you have characters in all three factions, you can get all three free houses.

So far, I have four homes, only decorating one and saving to buy another one I want for 1.3 million.

    And no, can't sell them.

Ummmm the crown store is for those that have lives that don't get to play as often as they would like and would rather spend the gold they do have on furnishings from achievement merchants. And just get the house with the hard earned money they do make which is what is taking up playtime in He first place

I'm kind of glad it's not like LoTRO's system. All those neighborhoods with abandoned houses that were foreclosed on. I've been a lifetime LoTRO subscriber from day 1 and always hated the housing system.

    Thanks guys.

Shame there's no neighborhood, but the rest sounds pretty interesting.

Make sure you preview the homes first before you buy. This entails a visit. Some homes have extensive grounds, some have smaller yards, even if they are bigger places. The other thing to consider is location. And, probably the most important thing with that is, once I walk out the gate, how far is to to a Wayshrine? The house near the Baandari Trade post in Malabal Tor is a good example of a place that is tucked away, but close to amenities. The Forsaken Stronghold in Bangkori in the SE corner of the map is an example of one that is not close to amenities or a wayshrine.

EDIT Got the houses mixed up the one in NE Bangkori is actually quite close to a waysrhine, it is the one in the SE that is not near one....

I second this. I think you have to enter the preview to buy it because that's the only place the menu appears, but it's well worth having a look around before you buy, and previewing some other houses in a similar price range/style/location to see which you like best.

I third this. Based on the pre-launch info I saw, I was all set to buy Captain Margueax's Place - then I previewed it and realized it was a small square box with no exterior area (though there is no denying it has a great location), for only slightly less gold than the better appointed Autumn's Gate. Also make sure you preview it in both furnished and unfurnished modes so you can get an idea of how furnishing will fit in the house - and also avoid the ugly surprise of learning that most homes don't come with a working fireplace.

I like how you judge people. I'll do it too.

You wouldn't even have housing without the people who spend crowns on this game, scrub. Kiss your fancy mounts, motifs, pets, houses, expansions and any other decent content in this game goodbye, because without the money ZOS makes from the crown store you won't be getting any of it.

It was that house that made me glad we can preview too. My first reaction was "small house, breton style, in Daggerfall...it's perfect!" then I saw it and went off it completely.

But I specifically wanted a house in DC lands and didn't like Hammerdeath Bungalow or Twin Arches either so I ended up upgrading to a medium house (Mournoth Keep).

With the housing at your disposal you can easily create whatever you wish, very cheap.
Even the smallest hut for 40k gold can serve you as a comfortable summer residence.
I'm not a sub, and use ony gold, selling my crafted furnitures (made from mats I found and bought for gold), and buying furnitures from other players. Recently I buy mostly the big paintings for my gallery, and selling blue roof lights for castles, this is a cool thing to think over different settings and how it looks in different positions. It's all about creativity and imagination. With the housing we can use both.

That's really cool! I've spent a lot of time playing around with Humblemud on the PTS but I never thought of doing anything like this.

(But one minor nitpick - it might be the cheapest small house but it's not the smallest. I think that's probably Snugpod, which is about the size of the interior of Humblemud, or Captain Margaux's Place.)
