Reputation system - a way to make quests more rewarding

So there I was playing the same quests for the 5th or more time. The quests are great and many reviews talk about how great they are. But in the end, they don't matter at all. The "hard choices" you have to take make zero difference. I know as an MMO there are a lot of restrictions, but I was thinking of a way you can take advantage of the cool moral choices that are currently wasting away: create a reputation system.

You can have reputation with different factions as in wow, or you as a player have a reputation for your deeds that defines you as a merciless justice paladin, a honorless thief and so on - with different bonuses for the different reputations: from simple vendor discounts/price increases to maybe unlocking certain things, such as costumes, or even take it as far as unlocking abilities based on this (like the intimidation/persuasion skills). I could rant on but I'll stop here.

I really think this would add A LOT of value to the game, and to questing in particular. I like to roleplay with my characters, to imagine my breton as a merciful hero, always sparing the guilty, and my argonian assassin tasking lives without a second thought. But in game this makes absolutely no difference. I think it would add a lot to the immersion of the game if quest choices were actually meaningful, and I think a reputation system could be a great way to do this. It would be a a challenge to add this for existing characters, but not impossible

Please share your thoughts and drop a thumbs up if you'd like this idea (or something similar) and maybe one day it will happen.
Cheers!

    I wouldn't mind a reputation system in a similar vein to Oblivion's Fame/infamy system

You're basically asking for a longer grind

Not sure when you played WoW but that system initially, before the first expansion was extremely tedious and we already have a lot of grinding

While I see what you are saying and I agree. They might consider your "level" in Mages, fighters, dark brotherhood and thieves guild the reputation you are talking about.

Plus "leveling your "reputation" in both Dark Brotherhood and Thieves guild unlocked costumes, titles and achievements.

I used way to many "quotes" Which I should be hit for, but I hope what I said made sense.

I remember how wow was like, but I think it could be quite different. There you had to get the reputation by grinding daily quests, but it could be a lot simpler (imagine wow with a 10x reputation gain). I'm thinking of a quest where a nord and an argonian argue for example, and you have to decide which way to go. Reputation can be exclusive, like if you go with the nord the argonians will dislike you so things stay balanced, despte that particular quest giving you a big influence bost.

I admit I didn't think the system in its smallest details, but I just feel the great quests with nice moral choices waste their potential without some way to also impact your game.

I'd love a reputation system, yes. It could be worked into the justice system. Anything that provides a consequence for your action would be a good thing.

Positive influence for helping out, buying a home in a city/zone, killing evil things, doing mission etc etc.
Negative influence for killing NPCs, dueling, stealing, etc etc.

Bonuses would incur if you have positive influence; like cheaper repair bills, etc etc.
Bonuses would incur if you have negative reputation, like being attacked on site by guards, etc.
If you can be anything, be kind.

First, we technically have reputation systems. TG and DB both have to be leveled to get access to passives. Let's not forget achievements unlock decos.

Second, most of SWTOR (which is based on a WoW) I don't want to see in this game. Reputation as they have it and OP is suggesting is a pointless grind that ends up encompassing everything.

i find it annoying when quests i can do are gated by outside metrics. Examples include many guild quests which wont unlock main quest line until your guild level has hit such and such. i feel those are hold-overs from the linear play design model.

that said, i would have no problem with new options added based on certain outside metrics.

imagine if instead of "go away until later..." the questers offered "hey, i see you are well placed in the guild so..." and added additional options success options.

    For example:

"yes go in there and close that invading portal and kill the general... but hey, i see have heard you mentioned in the mage guild meeting so... there are these five relics scattered around the place and the guild would pay handsomely if you can also recover those - some or all - but they are delicate and so once you get them you need to get them out and back here quickly."

As always, look to the new addition to add to the existing options but still let the normal routes play thru intact.

I don't think you were around prior to Burning Crusade then

It was to the point where less than 10% of the total population ever got full sets of the original Nax gear

The solo stuff was irritating as well because you were doing the same thing over and over only for reputation. At least here it's for loot which could randomly drop the first time or 1000th time.

I wouldn't welcome anything like that here......it's like undaunted grind or PvP grind
