Quests - main/sidequests

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering how you guys play the game. When you were new, did you do all the side quests and then the main quests - or was it a mix? I was thinking of completing all the sidequests before I complete the main story line. Is this a good idea, or does it make no difference at all on how you play it? What are your opinions?

I did alllll the quests. Now it doesn't really matter, since the XP is scaled to your level unless you dislike questing.

I do most side quests I can find on all my characters.

I tend to do them when I find them, so I don't have to backtrack later.

Well, it was a little bit different when I was new, because back then you only got access to a new chapter of the main quest when you reached a certain level. Now if you want you can do the entire main questline all in a row without doing anything else until you're done.

In some ways I like the new way better, and in some ways I like the old way better.

The big benefit to doing the entire main quest all more or less at once is that it will make more sense that way. Previously, when I spent long periods of time doing various other quests in between each chapter of the main quest, I missed a lot of what was really going on in the main quest, and it was only later when I went back and re-did those quests on other characters that I caught on with a lot of things that I missed, or that just didn't make much sense to me the first time around.

The big downside to not taking breaks in between main quest chapters in order to do other things and level is that you're not going to have a lot of skills unlocked (or a lot of game experience in general) while doing the main quest chapters, and as a result some of the fights are going to be pretty difficult for you.

IMO the best way to do it is probably to ignore the main quest for a bit at first. Complete your alliance's starter island(s), and maybe the first full zone first. Then go to the Harborage and focus on the main quest chapters, maybe taking a break or two along the way. When the main quest takes you to Coldharbour, I'd stop there and go back to complete your alliance zones before doing Coldharbour. That's what I'd recommend anyway.

If you enjoy questing the side quests are actually better than the main quests a lot of the time so they are worth doing. The main arc is all you really need to do though, those are the ones skill points come from. If you dont plan on doing all 6 professions on the one character you can even get away with not doing those and just grind for xp and skyshards to get enough skill points.

What I did was let the zones drive my progress. I would stay in a zone until I had done all the alliance and side quests, 'mapped' out the whole zone and gotten all the skyshards. I would do the MQ, FG, MG as the quests came up but when any of them tried to send me to another zone, I put them on hold until I got there. Basically, I did all quests but only as the methodical exploration of the current zone allowed. If anything, my progress 'over the ground' was guided by skyshards. Lol.

Without spilling beans, I found that the more of the alliance, MG and FG I did before completing the MQ, the more enjoyable/satisfying the latter portions of the MQ were.
