House achievement requirements dont make sense, imo.

I think it makes a lot of sense to do it this way.

Firstly I wouldn't want to live in an area I don't know. I'd want to at least have a look around and see what's nearby before I decided to live there. And being the travelling hero type having a look around inevitably turns into getting drawn into everyone else's problems and trying to sort them out.

But also I wouldn't want to live in a lot of these locations in the state they start off in. The house I want is Mournoth Keep in northern Bankorai. When you first enter the zone it's almost impossible to go from there to the nearest city because some cult has taken over and is destroying the farms in the region and attacking anyone on the road. If I'm going to move in the least I'd want to do is clear that lot out, but to make sure they don't come right back I have to finish off their leaders too. And that just so happens to be the quest I have to do in order to be allowed to buy the house.

And as someone else said it ties into the Elder Scrolls tradition of making you earn the right to own property in an area. Which I also think makes sense. The people already living there don't want just anyone moving in, especially after the trouble they're already having. They want to know you're committed to the local community and can offer them something. Clearly what they need is protection from whoever is attacking and you're the ideal individual to provide it.

As for how it affects new players I don't think it's a problem unless they're really determined to not do any questing (in which case the crown store might be the better option). The achievements required scale with the size of house - to buy a small house you only need to complete one small quest hub nearby (if I remember correctly for Snugpod you only need to do 2 quests, both in the same location), and with One Tamriel you have the option of skipping straight to that zone instead of having to level up first.

I haven't even entered Bankorai yet, except on the PTS when I was looking at the area around my future house (I'm not a new player but I play slowly and across several characters) and I don't consider the achievement requirement any more daunting than the gold I need to get. I'm not sure which I'll complete first but I am sure that by the time I've got one the other won't take long at all.

As someone else said the problem seems to be that you're looking at each house as a temporary base of operations to use while you're doing quests in the area and then abandon when you move on and it's not designed that way. It's supposed to be a permanent home you commit to. That's (probably) why you can't sell them.

If you really like the game you'll eventually get all those achievements. Enjoy the zones and get cool prizes in the process. Much better than before actually. Besides completing a zone is not hard at all.

    Firstly, ...

Ive started leaning towards that kind of thinking too. Ive never been lazy in video games (Akatosh knows ive been lazy irl) so its not like i am not prepared to earn those achievements, i just know i would enjoy questing and exploration a lot more if i knew that after im done ill be able to go to my house and close the day that way.
    Thanks for your response!
