Fires are confusing. You can't just buy some wood, put it in the fireplace and set fire to it. Only specific fire items will work. You can tell which ones they are because they say 'Interactable, Light' in the description.
As for the bench it depends on where you place it. You need to put it flat on the ground (use right-click to align it to the floor) and make sure there's enough space in front of it for your character to sit down. When it's in the right place there should be a green glow around it.

Instead, I bought a regular stack of half-burned wood for 100g, crafted two Daedric Braziers, put the wood in the fireplace, and put the braziers in the wood. It probably works better this way than the Flaming Firewood would have.

Flaming Firewood is part of some of the houses when you buy them. Since there are no other sources for it and it's high in demand the price is pretty high.
80 crowns times 400g is 32000g for a fireplace. Still cheaper than buying the unfurnished house for 64k that comes with a fireplace.

That is a specific furnishing called the "Resplendent Sweetroll".Why is that sweet roll sparkling, though? My sweet roll doesn't sparkle. (and now that I've typed that, I feel like I should add a disclaimer stating that it's not a euphemism.)

Most crafting stations are this way (minus transmute and jewelry).
I prefer using the Nord Triple Torch and Logs to make my fireplaces. This allows me to make the fire small or large and relatively customizable in its blaze strength.
